Optical networks based on wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) tech nology offer the promise to satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Inter net infrastructure, and provide a scalable solution to support the bandwidth needs of future applications in the local and wide areas. In a waveleng- routed network, an optical channel, referred to as a lightpath, is set up between two network nodes for communication. Using WDM technology, an optical fiber link can support multiple non-overlapping wavelength channels, each of which can be operated at the data rate of 10 Gbps or 40 Gbps today. On the other hand, only a fraction of customers are expected to have a need for such a high bandwidth. Due to the large cost of the optical backbone infrastruc ture and enormous WDM channel capacity, connection requests with diverse low-speed bandwidth requirements need to be efficiently groomed onto hi- capacity wavelength channels. This book investigates the optimized design, provisioning, and performance analysis of traffic-groomable WDM networks, and proposes and evaluates new WDM network architectures. Organization of the Book Significant amount of research effort has been devoted to traffic grooming in SONET/WDM ring networks since the current telecom networks are mainly deployed in the form of ring topologies or interconnected rings. As the long-haul backbone networks are evolving to irregular mesh topologies, traffic grooming in optical WDM mesh networks becomes an extremely important and practical research topic for both industry and academia.

Optical networks employing wavelength division multiplexing technology have been well recognized as the core networks for the next generation Internet. In such networks, any fiber cut or node failure may lead to huge data loss. Thus, reliability is of great importance in the design of modern high-speed networks. At the same time, traffic grooming is another important design objective since it addresses multi-granularity traffic. The traditional routing approaches with differentiated services do not consider the traffic grooming case or reconfiguration method. Therefore, they are not resource efficient for the next generation Internet. In this dissertation, an effective reconfigurable traffic grooming with differentiated reliability scheme is proposed to efficiently use network resources. Compared with the conventional rerouting method, the proposed scheme makes the network more robust and immune from service interruptions. An integer linear programming (ILP) formulation is presented first. By solving the ILP formulation, an optimal solution is obtained for each incoming connection request. However, the solution is so time consuming, a heuristic algorithm is introduced to get an approximate optimal solution. The performance evaluation indicates that the connection blocking probability can be decreased greatly by the proposed scheme.

While a single fiber strand in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has over a terabit-per-second bandwidth and a wavelength channel has over a gigabit-per-second transmission speed, the network may still be required to support traffic requests at rates that are lower than the full wavelength capacity. To avoid assigning an entire lightpath to a small request, many researchers have looked at adding traffic grooming to the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem. In this work, we consider the RWA problem with traffic grooming (GRWA) for mesh networks under static and dynamic lightpath connection requests. The GRWA problem is NP-Complete since it is a generalization of the RWA problem which is known to be NP-Complete. We propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model that accurately depicts the GRWA problem. Because it is very hard to find a solution for large networks using ILP, we solve the GRWA problem by proposing two novel heuristics. The strength of the proposed heuristics stems from their simplicity, efficiency and applicability to large-scale networks. Our simulation results demonstrate that deploying traffic grooming resources on the edge of optical networks is more cost effective and results in a similar blocking performance to that obtained when distributing the grooming resources throughout the optical network domain.

Optical networks employing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) provide an ideal infrastructure to satisfy the huge (and increasing) bandwidth demands. However, the Future Internet (FI) is expected to accommodate many new services, which are not only bandwidth-intensive, but also characterized by heterogeneous quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. To capture this QoS heterogeneity and achieve high customers' satisfaction (by meeting Service-Level Agreements, SLA) as well as resource efficiency, service-centric provisioning is desirable. This dissertation studies novel models, algorithms, and architectures that will help achieve service-centric provisioning for next-generation optical WDM networks. We first study dynamic provisioning/reprovisioning schemes to satisfy SLAs. We assign an Urgency Level (UL) to each service indicating its status and relative importance (technically and economically). We propose an adaptive provisioning scheme that tracks a service's status, and re-allocates resources from low-UL services to higher-UL services, which are more at risk of violating their SLAs or have higher penalties. Next, we find that SLA is always at risk because of the dynamism of network failures. We show that SLA Violation Risk may vary between paths, and is affected by many factors (e.g., failure rate, connection holding time, etc.). We formulate the risk-aware routing problem in optical mesh networks, and present an efficient routing scheme that computes routes that are likely to successfully accommodate the SLA-requested availability. To accommodate customers' extra resilience requirements for specific time periods, we propose a novel SLA framework that supports Critical Windows (CW) to address these time-differentiated resilience demands. We identify opportunities for backup resource sharing in a time-domain multiplexing manner, and propose efficient schemes for connection assignment to minimize backup resources. We propose to back up services using primary paths of other services. We present a new provisioning framework called Service Cluster (SC) that uses no explicit backup resources but still provides protection. We devise an event-triggered scheme to support dynamic resource allocation in an SC. Typically, a certain amount of Operational Power is needed for service provisioning. We analyze the constituents of Operational Power, and discuss the opportunities for energy saving following a Traffic Engineering (TE) approach. Capturing the energy efficiency of provisioning strategies (i.e., optical bypass vs. traffic grooming) using a novel auxiliary graph, we present a Power-Aware provisioning scheme to minimize the Operational Power.
