Book Description
2007 — Jane Jacobs Urban Communication Publication Award – Urban Communication Foundation As twentieth-century city planners invested in new transportation systems to deal with urban growth, they ensured that the automobile rather than mass transit would dominate transportation. Combining an exploration of planning documents, sociological studies, and popular culture, Paul Fotsch shows how our urban infrastructure developed and how it has shaped American culture ever since. Watching the Traffic Go By emphasizes the narratives underlying our perceptions of innovations in transportation by looking at the stories we have built around these innovations. Fotsch finds such stories in the General Motors "Futurama" exhibit at the 1939 World's Fair, debates in Munsey's magazine, films such as Double Indemnity, and even in footage of the O. J. Simpson chase along Los Angeles freeways. Juxtaposed with contemporaneous critiques by Lewis Mumford, Theodor Adorno, and Max Horkheimer, Fotsch argues that these narratives celebrated new technologies that fostered stability for business and the white middle class. At the same time, transportation became another system of excluding women and the poor, especially African Americans, by isolating them in homes and urban ghettos. A timely, interdisciplinary analysis, Watching the Traffic Go By exposes the ugly side of transportation politics through the seldom-used lens of popular culture.

Book Description
From birth to death, we are on a journey with the destination clearly marked, and along the way we have to make decisions: How long do we have to get there and what is the best route? Underneath these are a million life questions, such as: How will I know? Is what I know enough? Where do I go to learn? We live in a world of impatient drivers and a lot of changing lanes, and it's hard to fully understand this journey called life. In Traffic of the Mind: Determining the Driving Forces of Our Lives, author Dede Casad offers answers in a collection of essays that lead to one large question: What is your driving force? You might call your driving force a passion, a calling, or just natural talent. Whatever it is, it's safe to say that each person possesses an individual driving force footprint unlike any other that is the core of his or her personality. Is it for recognition, power, or service? Is it a desire to comfort, listen, or teach? Whatever it is, get behind the wheel and, along with Dede, traverse the highways and byways of intriguing social, political, and spiritual demands that call and challenge every person into life's most congested Traffic of the Mind.

Book Description
About the Book In the placid village of Liberty, Nebraska, everything on the surface is simple. It’s a tight-knit community and the streets are safe. From the outside, families like the Kennedy’s are perfect exemplars of their little community. Otis Kennedy, the patriarch, serves as the small town’s legal kingpin and good-old-boy extraordinaire. His son, Layne, is a dedicated mortician and single father doing his best to make ends meet for his daughter, Marley. Marley, however, breaks this mold. A loner by disposition and privy to dark secrets that would destroy her family’s reputation, Marley is disillusioned with the world; her only light in this darkness is her twin brother Seth, a spiritual chimera that acts as her literal guardian angel. Marley knows the truth; There is a rotten vein that runs through her family, through her town, through society itself: Human Trafficking. Otis, when he’s not at Elk’s Club meetings or on the gold course, acts as legal counsel for a human trafficking ring. Layne suffers every day to forget the death of his first love, Marley’s mother, Lupe. And when Marley gets caught up in the darkness that pervades her family, it is only the Kennedy’s efforts and her ancestral Mayan ties that can pull her through the abyss.
