This terminology collection presents approximately 200 concepts that can be considered the basic vocabulary for the practical teaching of translation. Four languages are included: French, English, Spanish and German. Nearly twenty translation teachers and terminologists from universities in eight countries (Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela) defined the concepts and presented them in pedagogical form, with notes and examples. The terms describe specific language acts, the cognitive aspects involved in the translation process, the procedures involved in transfer from one language to another, and the results of these operations. All of the terms in each section of the book are cross-referenced. A dozen tables help the reader understand the relationships between the concepts, and a bibliography completes each section. Des linguistes, des traductologues et des stylisticiens ont mis en lumière la nécessaire homogénéité de leurs outils respectifs, lorsqu'ils sont appliqués à ce qui constitue le dénominateur commun de leurs diverses approches : la langue. En effet, on peut difficilement envisager de faire passer la spécificité d'un texte d'un encodage de départ donné à un encodage d'arrivée choisi (pour le traductologue), d'y découvrir la trace de mécanismes fondamentaux (pour le linguiste), d'en dégager des marqueurs de subjectivité créant des écarts par rapport à une norme plus ou moins établie (pour le stylisticien) sans être au fait des structures énonciatives et syntactico-sémantiques d'une (ou plusieurs) langue(s) naturelle(s). Most of the papers in this volume were written for the international conference on "Linguistics and the English Language" which was held in Toulouse on July 7 and 8, 2000. Their authors (linguists, translation specialists and stylisticians) underscore the necessarily homogeneous character of their scientific tools when applied to what obviously constitutes the common ground of their respective approaches : language. Indeed, one can hardly aim at translating the specific encoding of a given source-text into the chosen encoding of a target-text, at bringing out the traces of basic language mechanisms, at highlighting the markers of subjectivity generating significant deviations from more or less pre-established norms, without being fully aware of the enunciative, syntactic, and semantic structures of one (or several) natural language(s). This is precisely what each of the contributions selected for this volume tries to achieve, with its own specified methodological device.

A guide for translators, about the translation theory, the translation process, interpreting, subtitling, internationalization and localization and computer-assisted translation. A special section is dedicated to the translator's education and associations. The guide include, as annexes, several independent adaptations of the corresponding European Commission works, freely available via the EU Bookshop as PDF and via SetThings.com as EPUB, MOBI (Kindle) and PDF. For a “smart”, sensible translation , you should forget not the knowledge acquired at school or university, but the corrective standards. Some people want a translation with the touch of the source version, while another people feel that in a successful version we should not be able to guess the original language. We have to realize that both people have right and wrong, and that their only fault is to present requirement as an absolute truth. Teachers agree at least on this principle: “If a sentence is ambiguous, the translation must also be“. There is another critical, less easy to argue, based on an Italian phrase with particularly strong wording: “Traduttore, traditore“. This critique argues that any translation will betray the author‘s language, spirit, style … because of the choices on all sides. What to sacrifice, clarity or brevity, if the formula in the text is brief and effective, but impossible to translate into so few words with the exact meaning? One could understand this criticism that it encourages us to read “in the text.” It seems obvious that it is impossible to follow this advice into practice.
