Work and Employment in Europe
Author: Peter Cressey
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134801742
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 287
Book Description
Europe's work force is subject to a dual convergence process: from the transnational spread of new management practices and from the political force of European union. Trade union rights, hours of work, working practices and training provisions are all being subjected to these twin pressures. Work and Employment in Europe assesses both the convergent and divergent developments taking place at both pan-European and cross-national levels. Comparisons of British and French retailing, German and Italian manufacturing jobs, German and British youth training schemes, and small business strategies of Britain, France and Italy show simultaneous elements of convergence and national specifity.

Trade, Jobs and Wages
Author: Hian Teck Hoon
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 9781781952719
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
The world's increasing integration through trade and the persistence of high unemployment in Europe, and other areas of the world, highlight the need to understand the implications of free trade for unemployment. Trade, Jobs and Wages analyses how employment levels and real wages are affected by international trade. Popular trade theory disregards the impact of free trade on the rate of unemployment, since it assumes full employment at the outset. By focusing on the determinants of the natural rate of unemployment, Professor Hoon places an emphasis on real, as opposed to monetary, factors in accounting for long term trends in wages and unemployment.

A European Strategy for Jobs and Growth
Author: Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: European Union Committee
Publisher: The Stationery Office
ISBN: 0104008318
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 370
Book Description
This report by the European Union Committee examines the progress of the European Union in initiating a strategy for jobs and growth across the Community as a whole. The background to this report stems from the Spring European Council meeting in 2000, in Lisbon, and the launch of an economic reform agenda. The Committee observes that since the "Lisbon Agenda", little progress has been made and the performance of many of the larger European economies has been poor. The Committee has noted that certain worrying signs of protectionist behaviour have developed, especially regarding barriers of cross border mergers. The EU has recognized this weak performance and the Agenda was relaunched in 2005, with a greater focus on the key economic priorities of more growth and jobs. Also, all Member States are now required to produce an annual National Action Plan highlighting the policies being pursued to improve economic growth and increase employment. The Committee sets out a number of recommendations to further push forward the priorities of growth and jobs, including: that the Commission should seek to complete the progress towards an internal market; that Member States should influence one another in the development of good practice through statistical comparison of their economic progress, and agree on quantifiable targets; that the format of the National Action Plans should include not only the successes, but where countries are underperforming; that the Agenda be given a higher public profile.

Western Europe in Transition
Author: International Monetary Fund
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1451954506
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
This paper examines the impact of the opening up of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union on Western Europe. The analysis suggests that given reasonable (yet necessarily imprecise) assumptions on the likely developments in the previously centrally planned economies (PCPEs) over the next ten years, West European capital markets are likely to experience only a mild squeeze from their concerted efforts to provide external financing to the East. Most macroeconomic aggregates are likely to suffer shocks significantly smaller than would be expected from a typical business cycle.

Global Trade and European Workers
Author: Paul Brenton
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349270350
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 228
Book Description
Are jobs and wages, particularly those of the low-skilled, undermined by trade and investment with Asian and other emerging economies? This book presents contributions on this issue which place the analytical and policy debate into context and survey the relevant economic literature together with a range of empirically oriented papers. The focus is upon Europe, which, unlike the US, has received little attention in the debate on the impact of world trade. The book shows that simple one-line messages on the impact of trade on jobs and wages have no sound analytical foundations.
