This paper reviews a variety of research studies of worker exposure in forestry & agriculture, as well as some observations of homeowners & lawn care workers, in order to consider the exposure of forest workers to herbicides. It first summarizes general approaches to the assessment of worker exposure to herbicides, then discusses research on such matters as absorption of herbicides through skin contact, protective measures, urinary excretion of herbicide after exposure, variations in exposure when using different types of applicator equipment, contact with treated vegetation as a source of herbicide exposure, and exposure following burning of treated vegetation. The final section makes suggestions toward developing exposure standards for forest workers.

2,4-D was first registered in 1947 as a broadleaf herbicide for use in all facets of vegetation management. Wide use of this herbicide has led to considerable research on the toxicology of 2,4-D formulations. This paper reviews research reported in the literature concerning the toxicology of 2,4-D and evaluates the risks to forest workers associated with exposure to 2,4-D formulations. It first summarizes the forms of 2,4-D used in commercial products and what is known about the behaviour of 2,4-D in the body (adsorption, metabolism, excretion). It then examines the herbicide's systemic toxicity (including human intoxication, general systemic effects, neurological effects, & effects on immune response), reproductive & developmental effects, mutagenic effects, and genetic toxicity & related cellular effects. The final section assesses the carcinogenic potential of 2,4-D, including discussion of the findings of several expert panels assembled to examine the experimental & epidemiological data. Selected epidemiological findings are also discussed specifically to illustrate the difficulties in deriving meaningful conclusions from these studies. Includes glossary.
