Book Description
With majority of the Earth’s people now urban dwellers, and cities being the most efficient habitat for the utilisation of resources, it is imperative that we continue to support standards of living and efficiencies of urban areas. However, the urbanisation process has not been without its problems. While much has been done to address the original issues surrounding the quality of urban life, new challenges continue to arise. It is no longer sustainable to achieve improvements by means that require greater and greater energy consumption as we did in the past. Despite their complexity, however, cities are a great laboratory for architects, engineers, and other key professionals to apply new ideas and new technology to meet our requirements for more sustainable city environments. Containing papers presented at the latest in a series of conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, these proceedings, split in to two volumes address not just environmental, architectural, and engineering concerns, but also quality of life, security, risk, and heritage. The diversity of topics and the case studies based on existing projects make the book an important contribution to the literature on urban planning.

Book Description
This book, Design for Sustainable Inclusion, was inspired and informed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These include, among others, ‘good health and well-being’, ‘reduced inequalities’ and ‘sustainable cities and communities’. Addressing this challenge requires a cross-disciplinary approach and close collaboration with many stakeholders. The Cambridge Workshop on Universal Access and Assistive Technology (CWUAAT) 2023 invited participants from a wide variety of disciplines to contribute to the discussion on this topic. This book represents the papers presented at this conference, chosen by peer review by an international panel of currently active researchers. The chapters within the book provide a unique insight into current national and international research in the fields of inclusive design, universal access, and assistive and rehabilitative technology. The main sections of the book reflect the following key themes: • Understanding people • Designing for an ageing population • Inclusive built environments • Healthcare • Assistive technology • Design methods • Education and training We hope that this book will be useful to researchers, teachers, students and the general public who are interested in inclusive design and sustainable development.

Book Description
Mixed city is a term widely used in Israel to describe areas occupied by both Jewish and Arab communities. In a critical examination of such cities, the author shows how a clear spatial and mental division exists between Arabs and Jews in Israel, and how the occurrence of such communities is both exceptional and involuntary. Looking at Jewish-Arab relations in Israel in the context of the built environment, it is argued that there are complex links between socio-political relations and the production of contested urban space. The case study of one particular Jewish-Arab "mixed city", the city of Lod, is used as the platform for wider theoretical discussion and political analysis. This city has great significance in the present global context, as more and more cities are becoming polarized, ghettoized, and fragmented in surprisingly similar ways. This book examines the visible planning apparatuses and the "hidden" mechanisms of social, political, and cultural control involved in these processes. Focusing on the spatialities of power, this book brings to the fore a critical discussion of the urban processes that shape Jewish-Arab "mixed cities" in Israel, and will be of interest to students and scholars of Urban Studies, Middle East Studies and Politics in general.
