Book Description
I am advised by my publishers that this book is to be included in their catalogue of humorous publications, and this friendly warning gives me an opportunity to say that however humorous it may be in effect, its intention is perfectly serious; and, even if it were otherwise, it seems to me that a volume written wholly in dialect must have its solemn, not to say melancholy, features. With respect to the Folk-Lore scenes, my purpose has been to preserve the legends themselves in their original simplicity, and to wed them permanently to the quaint dialect—if, indeed, it can be called a dialect—through the medium of which they have become a part of the domestic history of every Southern family; and I have endeavored to give to the whole a genuine flavor of the old plantation.

Book Description
The main reason why Uncle Remus retired from business as a story-tellerwas because the little boy to whom he had told his tales grew to bea very big boy, and grew and grew till he couldn't grow any bigger.Meanwhile, his father and mother moved to Atlanta, and lived there forseveral years. Uncle Remus moved with them, but he soon grew tired of thedubious ways of city life, and one day he told his Miss Sally that ifshe didn't mind he was going back to the plantation where he could get abreath of fresh air.He was overjoyed when the lady told him that they were all going backas soon as the son married. As this event was to occur in the course ofa few weeks, Uncle Remus decided to wait for the rest of the family. The wedding came off, and then the father and mother returned to theplantation, and made their home there, much to the delight of the oldnegro. In course of time, the man who had been the little boy for ever so longcame to have a little boy of his own, and then it happened in the mostnatural way in the world that the little boy's little boy fell under thespell of Uncle Remus, who was still hale and hearty in spite of his age. This latest little boy was frailer and quieter than his father had been;indeed, he was fragile, and had hardly any color in his face. But he wasa beautiful child, too beautiful for a boy. He had large, dreamy eyes, and the quaintest little ways that ever were seen; and he was politeand thoughtful of others. He was very choice in the use of words, andtalked as if he had picked his language out of a book. He was a source ofperpetual wonder to Uncle Remus; indeed, he was the wonder of wonders, and the old negro had a way of watching him curiously. Sometimes, as theresult of this investigation, which was continuous, Uncle Remus wouldshake his head and chuckle; at other times, he would shake his head andsigh.
