Dively Dis tinguished Professor of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, this festschrift embraces a remarkably diverse set of topics. Drawing from the fields of pattern recognition, engineering, artificial intelligence and artificial neural systems, it is a fitting testament to the extraordinary breadth of his professional in terests both in foundational research into the new technology of Intelligent Systems and ill the application of that evolving technology to the solution of hard engineering problems. In common with many scientists who build their reputations in one field before devoting their considerable energies and talents to another one, by 1972, the year in which I met him for the first time, Yoh-Han had made significant contributions to laser technology, in particular to the development of the highly accurate and stable lasers required for holographic recording purposes. In conventional holography, the information stored in a hologram produces a virtual image of the object charac terised by it. However, Yoh-Han became fascinated by the possiblity of driving the process hackwards, of using the hologram as an associative memory device enabling previously stored information to be retrieved on the basis of partial cues. Obwohl -I/ESC- und -IDI̯- eine sehr vergleichbare Entwicklung genommen haben, sind sie noch nie in einer gemeinsamen Studie untersucht worden. Während das Schicksal von -I/ESC- bei Romanisten auf großes Interesse stieß, wurde die Verbindung zu -IDI̯- bis dato nur fragmentarisch beschrieben. Die vorliegende Studie möchte diese Lücke durch eine ergänzende Analyse der "Metamorphosen", die beide Segmente in der Fortentwicklung vom Lateinischen zum Romanischen genommen haben, schließen. This volume and its companion volume includes the edited versions of the principal lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. The Institute was held in the Department of Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from June 25th to July 6th 1989 and was attended by eighty participants from Universities and Research Institutes around the world. A number of practising civil and structural engineers also attended. The lectures and papers have been divided into two volumes to reflect the dual themes of the Institute namely Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. Planning for this ASI commenced in late 1986 when Andrew Templeman and I discussed developments in the use of the systems approach in civil engineering. A little later it became clear that much of this approach could be realised through the use of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Both Don Grierson and John Gero indicated at an early stage how important it would be to include knowledge-based systems within the scope of the Institute. The title of the Institute could have been: 'Civil Engineering Systems' as this would have reflected the range of systems applications to civil engineering problems considered by the Institute. These volumes therefore reflect the full range of these problems including: structural analysis and design; water resources engineering; geotechnical engineering; transportation and environmental engineering.
