Author: Robert Mellin
Publisher: Princeton Architectural Press
ISBN: 9781568988078
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
There is an almost elemental appeal in the rural fishing villages of Nova Scotia, Maine, and Newfoundland. Their intimate connection to nature, to the land, water, and (often harsh) weather; their reliance on ingenuity, on-hand materials, and craftsmanship; and their values of thrift and endurance serve as inspiration and as touchstones for those of us caught up in the hubbub of modern life. Tilting, Newfoundland is a celebration of all these virtues and an eclectic documentation of the buildings, landscape, and lifestyle of this remote community on a small island far off the Canadian coast. Through photographs, firsthand historical anecdotes, and delicate pencil drawings, author Robert Mellin presents a personal account of Tilting's houses, outbuildings, furniture, tools, fences, and docks, and, in the process, the way of life of Tilting. Mellin describes how houses are built for mobility and then "launched," or moved; how houses are detailed and constructed; how cabbage houses are built out of overturned boats; and the difference between picket, paling, and riddle fences-with diagrams in case you want to build your own. Part journal, part sketchbook, part oral history, Tilting, Newfoundland is a treasure chest of a book that offers new discoveries with each reading, and a reminder of the simpler aspects of life and building.

Narrow Tilting Vehicles
Author: Chen Tang
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031015010
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 75
Book Description
To resolve the urban transportation challenges like congestion, parking, fuel consumption, and pollution, narrow urban vehicles which are small in footprint and light in their gross weight are proposed. Apart from the narrow cabin design, these vehicles are featured by their active tilting system, which automatically tilts the cabin like a motorcycle during the cornering for comfort and safety improvements. Such vehicles have been manufactured and utilized in city commuter programs. However, there is no book that systematically discusses the mechanism, dynamics, and control of narrow tilting vehicles (NTVs). In this book, motivations for building NTVs and various tilting mechanisms designs are reviewed, followed by the study of their dynamics. Finally, control algorithms designed to fully utilize the potential of tilting mechanisms in narrow vehicles are discussed. Special attention is paid to an efficient use of the control energy for rollover mitigation, which greatly enhance the stability of NTVs with optimized operational costs.

Exceptional Vector Bundles, Tilting Sheaves and Tilting Complexes for Weighted Projective Lines
Author: Hagen Meltzer
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 082183519X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 154
Book Description
Deals with weighted projective lines, a class of non-commutative curves modelled by Geigle and Lenzing on a graded commutative sheaf theory. They play an important role in representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras; the complexity of the classification of coherent sheaves largely depends on the genus of these curves.

Tilting in Abelian Categories and Quasitilted Algebras
Author: Dieter Happel
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821804448
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 103
Book Description
We generalize tilting with respect to a tilting module of projective dimension at most one for an Artin algebra to tilting with respect to a torsion pair in an Abelian category. Our construction is motivated by the connection between tilting and derived categories. We develop a general theory for such tilting, and are led to a generalization of tilting algebras which we call quasitilted algebras. This class also contains the canonical algebras, and we show that the quasitilted algebras are characterized by having global dimension at most two and each indecomposable module having projective dimension at most one or injective dimension at most one. We also give other characterizations of quasitilted algebras, and give methods for constructing such algebras.

Equivalence and Duality for Module Categories with Tilting and Cotilting for Rings
Author: Robert R. Colby
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9781139452434
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 170
Book Description
This book provides a unified approach to much of the theories of equivalence and duality between categories of modules that has transpired over the last 45 years. In particular, during the past dozen or so years many authors (including the authors of this book) have investigated relationships between categories of modules over a pair of rings that are induced by both covariant and contravariant representable functors, in particular by tilting and cotilting theories. By here collecting and unifying the basic results of these investigations with innovative and easily understandable proofs, the authors' aim is to provide an aid to further research in this central topic in abstract algebra, and a reference for all whose research lies in this field.
