Book Description
This work looks at some of the major politial thinkers of post-colonial Africa. They are also some of the most influential on the continent and beyond. They tried to find a place for Africa in the world as an entity with its own unique identity capable of choosisng its own path towards unity and development, a third way that is not defined or dictated by the East or the West or by any other political and idelogical camp. Their ideas and philosophies continue to resonate and have an impact on Africa today as the people try to find solutions to their own problems, focusing on solutions within instead of seeking them from outside.

Book Description
This work looks at three African visionaries - Nkrumah, Nyerere and Senghor - and the paths they felt the continent should take in its quest for unity and development, how it should define and foster its identity, and what role it should play in the international arena as an integral part of the global community. It also explores some of the differences they had in pursuit of those goals.

Book Description
Although many readers will find Going All the Way Round a guide to the care of their own aging parents, it is primarily the story of the author's ambivalence about her care of her parents as they aged. She hadn't expected to be a nurse. She found all kinds of surprises in dealing with her mother and father and the demands of care-giving. For example, there were her attempts to hire aides for her dad who wouldn't steal the silverware or bring their horses or husbands to work with them, and her mother's forgotten savings accounts. Dealing with their many problems made the author a strong and determined person. Despite the pain involved, she would not have changed anything.

Book Description
Sub-Saharan Africa faces many development challenges, such as its size and diversity, rapid urban population growth, history of colonial exploitation, fragile states and conflicts over land and natural resources. This collection, contributed from different academic disciplines and professions, seeks to support the UN Habitat New Urban Agenda passed at Habitat III in Quito, Ecuador, in 2016. It will attract readers from urban specialisms in law, geography and other social sciences, and from professionals and policy-makers concerned with land use planning, surveying and governance. Among the topics addressed by the book are challenges to governance institutions: how international development is delivered, building land management capacity, funding for urban infrastructure, land-based finance, ineffective planning regulation, and the role of alternatives to courts in resolving boundary and other land disputes. Issues of rights and land titling are explored from perspectives of human rights law (the right to development, and women's rights of access to land), and land tenure regularization. Particular challenges of housing, planning and informality are addressed through contributions on international real estate investment, community participation in urban settlement upgrading, housing delivery as a partly failing project to remedy apartheid's legacy, and complex interactions between political power, money and land. Infrastructure challenges are approached in studies of food security and food systems, urban resilience against natural and man-made disasters, and informal public transport.

Book Description
Africa has experienced two liberations: the first from colonial and racist regimes, and the second from the autocrats who often followed foreign rule. African countries now have the potential to undertake a third liberation - from political economies characterised by graft, crony capitalism, rents-seeking, elitism and social inequality. This third liberation will open up the economic space in which business can compete - a necessary condition for expanding employment. During the 2000s, the continent had its best growth decade on record since independence. High commodity prices offer a launch pad for sustained growth and employment creation. Now is the moment for African countries to act. This book asks how Africa's political leaders and interest groups can promote economic growth in their countries. Drawing on studies of countries outside Africa, Jeffrey Herbst and Greg Mills identify the factors separating the performers from the laggards worldwide. Aside from the need to create an enabling environment for business through good governance, provision of infrastructure and improvements in education, most critical is the need for a laser-like development focus by governments. In Africa's Third Liberation, Jeffrey Herbst and Greg Mills show why a new African political debate is necessary to make progress in accelerating growth and creating jobs.
