Book Description
Excerpt from Three Fundamental Principles of the Spiritual Life A certain Persian prince was a great friend to learning. From all directions he gathered together learned writings for his library, and wherever he went his books had to accompany him. They, however, became after a time no small burden. He then com missioned some learned men to abridge the wisdom of the accumulated books into a num ber of volumes that could be conveniently carried on a camel. But as he found even this too laborious an undertaking after a time, the various books were further epito mized into one book, and finally this single volume into a smgle rule of life which the prince could carry everywhere without any trouble. And so all was easier and better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From all directions he gathered together learned writings for his library, and wherever he went his books had to accompany him. They, however, became after a time no small burden. He then commissioned some learned men to abridge the wisdom of the accumulated books into a number of volumes that could be conveniently carried on a camel. But as he found even this too laborious an undertaking after a time, the various books were further epitomized into one book, and finally this single volume into a single rule of life which the prince could carry everywhere without any trouble. And so all was easier and better. That is the thought which underlies these pages. There are countless and voluminous books on the spiritual life. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Religious Life The chief object for which this work has been written is to furnish those who wish to lead a solidly devout life in the Ecclesiastical, in the Religious, or in the Secular State, with a manual or text-book containing, in as compendious a form as possible, the 'principles' upon which such a life must be built. The sources whence materials for an undertaking of this kind may be drawn are various and numerous; but out of the many at my disposal, two are especially deserving of mention, inasmuch as it has been by the doctrine which I have learnt from them, that I have been guided in much that has been treated of in this book. The first of these are the works of Cassian, to which, as a child of St. Benedict, I felt myself drawn as it were by instinct; for, it was from the world-famed 'Conferences' of this learned ascetic that our holy Father drew much of that spiritual lore which is so conspicuous in the various enactments of his Rule, and to the pages of which he refers his children, for those sublime lessons of spiritual wisdom, which will lead them to the topmost height of Christian perfection. Cassian's teaching, save upon the question of divine grace, is unexceptionally good. His deficiency upon this point may be satisfactorily accounted for, if we bear in mind that in his day various questions which arise out of this most intricate subject had not been thoroughly examined into and set at rest for ever by the infallible decision of the Church. The second is the 'Theologia Mystica' of Father Dominick Schram, O.S.B., in which that erudite Religious has bequeathed to us valuable treasures of Christian asceticism arranged with scientific accuracy, and stored away with scholastic neatness and precision. The plan of which I have made use for reducing to order the mass of material which presented itself to my hands, is a very simple one. Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of the Interior or Hidden Life: Designed Particularly for the Considerable of Those Who Are Seeking Assurance of Faith and Perfect Love Tunas is a modification or form of religious expe rience which may conveniently, and probably with a considerable degree of propriety, be denominated the Interior or Hidden Life. When a person first becomes distinctly conscious of his sinfulness, and, in connection with this experience, exercises faith in Christ as a Savior from sin, there is no doubt, however feeble these early exercises may be, that he has truly entered upon a new life. But this new life, although it is in its element dif ferent from that of the world, is only in its beginning. It embraces, undoubtedly, the true principle of arestored and renovated existence, which in due time will expand itself into heights and depths of knowledge and of feeling; but it is now only in a state of incipiency, main taining, and oftentimes but feehly maintaining, a war with the anterior or natural life, and being nothing more at present than the early rays and dawnings of the brighter day that is coming. Book Description
Excerpt from The Law of the New Thought: A Study of Fundamental Principles and Their Application It is difficult to convey a hint of this Truth to any but those who are prepared to receive. To others it often seems like arrant folly. Emerson has well said: Every man's words, who speaks from that life, must sound vain to those who do not dwell In the same thoughts on their own part. I dare not speak for it. My words do not carry. Its august sense; they fall short and cold. Only itself can inspire whom it will. Yet I desire by profane words, if sacred I may not use, to indicate the heaven of this deity, and to report what hints I have collected of the transcendant simplicity and energy of the Highest Law. Book Description
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In this formula that Christians recite as though on autopilot lie the secrets for healing our world, rekindling our visionary imagination, and manifesting the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. It’s an astonishing claim, but one that is supported by Cynthia Bourgeault’s exploration of Trinitarian theology—and by her bold work in further articulating the deep truth it contains. She looks to the ancient concept in light of the ideas of G. I. Gurdjieff and Jacob Boehme to reveal the Trinity as the "hidden driveshaft" within Christianity: the compassionate expression of the Uncreated Reality in creation.
