Book Description
Winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award An award-winning novel that uses both vast panoramic views and lovingly reconstructed detail to provide an unforgettable picture of nineteenth-century Bengal. The Bengal Renaissance and the 1857 uprising form the backdrop to Those Days, a saga of human frailties and strength. The story revolves around the immensely wealthy Singha and Mukherjee families, and the intimacy that grows between them. Ganganarayan Singha's love for Bindubasini, the widowed daughter of the Mukherjees, flounders on the rocks of orthodoxy even as his zamindar father, Ramkamal, finds happiness in the arms of the courtesan, Kamala Sundari. Bimbabati, Ramkamal's wife, is left to cope with her loneliness. A central theme of the novel is the manner in which the feudal aristocracy, sunk in ritual and pleasure, slowly awakens to its social obligations. Historical personae interact with fictional protagonists to enrich the narrative. Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the reformer; Michael Madhusudan Dutt, the poet; the father and son duo of Dwarkanath and Debendranath Tagore; Harish Mukherjee, the journalist; Keshab Chandra Sen, the Brahmo Samaj radical; David Hare and John Bethune, the English educationists—these and a host of others walk the streets of Calcutta again, to bring alive a momentous time.

Book Description
Based on the wildly popular webcomic, One of Those Days chronicles the life and love of Yehuda and Maya Devir as they take on the minutiae of marriage, the ups and downs of daily life, and the paradigm shift of new parenthood. “Bursting with life . . . We get to know them through one-panel installments as though they’ve walked straight into the room, introduced themselves, and moved in.”—Kate Beaton, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Hark! A Vagrant Yehuda and Maya Devir began illustrating their life in comics when they moved into their first apartment together in Tel Aviv as newlyweds. In the years since, One of Those Days has become one of the biggest webcomics on the Internet, with millions of followers around the world. Yehuda Devir grew up on superhero comic books, and the Devirs’ visual style is downright kinetic and bursting with life. In this collection—the first time that the Devirs’ comics have been compiled in one volume—they share stories that are heartwarming, hilarious, and universally recognizable. So even for those who don’t feel like pulling out an assault rifle to wage war on a kitchen cockroach, the Devirs’ challenges and triumphs are instantly familiar to anyone who’s had one of those days.

Providing a window into an unspoiled America of forty years ago, In Revere welcomes you to the fiercely loyal and devoted Italian-American family of the Benedettos. Although he was orphaned as a child, young Anthony Benedetto was always surrounded by family, and the vibrant warmth of the Revere community. His Uncle Peter, a former Golden Gloves boxer whose days of glory were behind him, believed Tonio was bound for great things. So did his daughter Rosie, Tonio's favorite cousin, who would take many wrong turns--away from Tonio--through adolescence. His gentle grandparents, who took him in, encouraged him to claim a future outside of Revere, but the warm, unconditional love of his family, and the smells and sounds of Revere stay with him forever.

Book Description
It was the mid-nineties. Somewhere in 1995, as I recollect now, my trips to Banaras were frequent. My company wanted me to develop a business in the carpet industry. The industry was spread in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh, mainly in Mirzapur and Bhadohi. A fast way of reaching there was to go via Varanasi. Unlike today, there was only one airline service provider, and that was Indian Airlines. Like a nomad, I landed on my first trip without knowing how to reach the destinations with few addresses. Working on limited travel budgets, I checked in a small hotel in the center of Banaras. As I came out of the hotel, I wandered in the gullies, enjoying the street food of Banaras. The city was hospitable and welcomed a newcomer like me. For many trips I used shared Armada Jeeps to reach my destination. Traveling in those shared jeeps was a memorable experience. While a standard Jeep would accommodate six people, they would load twelve people with the driver almost hanging outside and just about maneuvering the steering wheel. The fact was, it all worked. Coming back to business, while I started to work with individual carpet companies there, it was apparent we needed some representative there to manage the business. I connected with Anoop through familiar industry friends, who ran his textile chemical business from Bhadohi itself. Over the next two years, the business picked up. Anoop and I became very close. For the next few trips, I stayed in Bhadohi itself as it saved a lot of travel time, and Anoop would bring food from his home to ensure I was comfortable. When he would be in Mumbai, he would stay at Hotel Manama next to VT station, and sometimes we both would enjoy breakfast at the famous Pancham Puriwala. In the years I was there with the company, we were satisfied with the progress we made in developing a new business segment. I left that company and moved on, and with me, all my contacts and friends also moved on. I lost touch with Anoop too. But a couple of years back, I was walking on the streets of the Fort area, saw Hotel Manama and Hotel Pancham Puriwala; I remembered Anoop and our association. I came to know later that Anoop was no more. He had passed away at a very young age due to a heart attack, and his father had wound up the business Anoop had started. It was with subdued melancholy that I remembered Anoop and the time we had spent together. We all have such a vast gallery of images that stays with us for years. Sometimes, it makes sense to relive those moments, even if it means doing it in dreams. My book Yearning to live those days is a compilation of short stories, and is purely a work of fiction. These have been inspired by the many incidents and observations over a period, coupled with thoughts and imagination. The stories are all about relationships, emotions, and love in different shades. I thank all those who will read these narrations.

Book Description
For the first time, the three-part autobiography of one of modern Egypt's greatest writers and thinkers is available in a single paperback volume. The first part, An Egyptian Childhood (1929), is full of the sounds and smells of rural Egypt. It tells of Hussein's childhood and early education in a small village in Upper Egypt, as he learns not only to come to terms with his blindness but to excel in spite of it and win a place at the prestigious Azhar University in Cairo. The second part, The Stream of Days: A Student at the Azhar (1939), is an enthralling picture of student life in Egypt in the early 1900s, and the record of the growth of an unusually gifted personality. More than forty years later, Hussein published A Passage to France (1973), carrying the story on to his final attainment of a doctorate at the Sorbonne, a saga of perseverance in the face of daunting odds.

Book Description
This account of the four baseball seasons of 1900 through 1903 seeks to capture the flavor of the period by providing yearly overviews from the standpoint of each team and by focusing more deeply on 30 or more players of the era--not only such legendary stars as Cy Young and Willie Keeler, but also relative unknowns such as Bill Keister and Kip Selbach. Each team section is supplemented by a table providing the significant batting and pitching statistics for each regular team member. The major theme of the period was the baseball war between the National and American leagues from 1900 to 1903. But the broad multi-season, multi-team view allows varying the focus. The pennant races receive due attention but there are other aspects of the baseball drama, such as: the aging star who finds a way to extend his period of dominance (Cy Young); the young, unpolished phenom whose raw talent enables him to excel (Christy Mathewson); and the fierce competitor who risks injury to help his team (Joe McGinnity or Deacon Phillippe).
