Thomas Mann's Death in Venice
Author: Ellis Shookman
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer
ISBN: 157113056X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 321
Book Description
Study of the critical reception of one of the most famous and widely read works of modern literature. Thomas Mann's 1912 novella Death in Venice is one of the most famous and widely read texts in all of modern literature, raising such issues as beauty and decadence, eros and irony, and aesthetics and morality. The amount and variety of criticism on the work is enormous, and ranges from psychoanalytic criticism and readings inspired by Mann's own homosexuality to inquiries into the place of the novella in Mann's oeuvre, its structure and style, and its symbolism and politics. Critics have also drawn connections between the novella and works of Plato, Euripides, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Platen, Wagner, Nietzsche, Gide, and Conrad. Ellis Shookman surveys the reception of Deathin Venice, analyzing several hundred books, articles, and other reactions to the novella, proceeding in a chronological manner that allows a historical perspective. Critics cited include Heinrich Mann, Hermann Broch, D. H. Lawrence, Karl Kraus, Kenneth Burke, Georg Lukàcs, Wolfgang Koeppen, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Thomas Mann himself. Particular attention is paid to Luchino Visconti's film, Benjamin Britten's opera, and to other more recent creative adaptations, both in Germany and throughout the world. Ellis Shookman is associate professor of German at Dartmouth College.

Correspondence 1943-1955
Author: Theodor W. Adorno
Publisher: Polity
ISBN: 0745632009
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
In December 1945 Thomas Mann wrote a famous letter to Adorno in which he formulated the principle of montage adopted in his novel Doctor Faustus. The writer expressly invited the philosopher to consider, with me, how such a work and I mean Leverkhns work could more or less be practically realized. Their close collaboration on questions concerning the character of the fictional composers putatively late works (Adorno produced specific sketches which are included as an appendix to the present volume) effectively laid the basis for a further exchange of letters. The ensuing correspondence between the two men documents a rare encounter of creative tension between literary tradition and aesthetic modernism which would be sustained right up until the novelists death in 1955. In the letters, Thomas Mann openly acknowledged his fascinated reading of Adornos Minima Moralia and commented in detail on the Essay on Wagner, which he was as eager to read as the one in the Book of Revelation consumes a book which tastes as sweet as honey. Adorno in turn offered detailed observations upon and frequently enthusiastic commendations of Manns later writings, such as The Holy Sinner, The Betrayed One and The Confessions of Felix Krull. Their correspondence also touches upon issues of great personal significance, notably the sensitive discussion of the problems of returning from exile to postwar Germany. The letters are extensively annotated and offer the reader detailed notes concerning the writings, events and personalities referred or alluded to in the correspondence.

Thomas Mann
Author: Donald A. Prater
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 600
Book Description
This is the first up-to-date biography in English of Thomas Mann (1875-1955), perhaps the greatest German novelist of the twentieth century. Mann was the author of several classics of modern European fiction, including Death in Venice, The Magic Mountain, Buddenbrooks, and The Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Trickster, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and a staunch opponent of Nazism (which eventually drove him intoexile). Celebrated biographer Donald Prater traces Mann's life and work, from his upbringing in Lubeck, through his years in Munich, his exile in the US, and his last years in Switzerland. He discusses Mann's relationship with his novelist brother Heinrich, his homosexuality, his career as aprolific essayist, and the vast achievement of his novels. But the biography devotes particular attention to Mann's political thinking and his role in the rise and fall of Hitlerism. In Mann's development from nationalistic conservatism to a vigorous humanist anti-Nazism, Prater sees a fascinatingand crucially important illustration of the 'German problem' still so much of relevance to the Europe of today. Elegantly written, and always entertaining, Thomas Mann: A Life will take its place as the major biography of Mann.
