James Wimble was best known for his map of the Lower Cape Fear Region in 1733, and especially for his final map of 1738. The port town of Wilmington, North Carolina holds the greatest American memorial for James Wimble because he saved the fledgling town from ruin. As Alan D. Watson, in Wilmington, North Carolina, to 1861 put it, Wimble "no doubt was the prime instigator of the new town." Londoners would remember him for his exploits as a privateer in the War of Jenkins Ear, in the 1740's. Many of the British local "rags" describe him as taking prizes of great "burthen" and "rich cargo." These exciting times for English readers proved less than exuberant for Wimble, however. What we know of him during that time mostly comes from British records. His wife died, he lost an arm to chain shot in 1742, and later, almost his life while chasing down a Spanish ship through the Florida Keys in a ship that he named "Revenge." In his final days, James Wimble went back to London to engage in the timber trade.

In 1927, when his letters to two Texas governors about the assassination of Mexican Americans in police custody in South Texas were ignored, Alonso S. Perales wrote to President Coolidge, asking for the Justice Department to conduct an official investigation into their deaths. Perales believed US citizens of Mexican descent had an obligation to their country, “including offering our lives for this Nation when necessary.” He also believed adamantly that the United States had a duty to protect the rights of all its people. Originally published in Spanish in 1936 and 1937, In Defense of My People contains articles, letters and speeches written by one of the most influential civil rights activists of the early twentieth century. When Mexican-American veterans of World War II were denied service in a South Texas pool hall, even while wearing their uniforms, Perales wrote about the incident for The San Antonio Express. He also exhorted his community to secure an education and participate in civic duties. His form letter, “How to Request School Facilities for Our Children,” helped parents secure schools “equal to those furnished children of Anglo-American descent.” Alonso S. Perales was the co-founder of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), an attorney, activist and US diplomat. He has been largely forgotten, in part because his writings were in Spanish. This first-ever English translation of his two-volume publication, En defensa de mi raza, will make Perales’ contributions to equal rights for Mexicans and Mexican Americans available to a much larger audience. A long-lost gem of the civil rights movement, this book is a must-read for historians and anyone interested in the Latino community’s fight for rights, dignity and respect.

From its origins in the Victorian era as a marginal and somewhat shady enterprise, the advertising trade in Canada changed radically after the turn of the century - rising quickly to a position of influence and respectability. In this book, Russell Johnston tells the story of the people who made it so. Johnston's setting is the dynamic intersection of business and culture during the early decades of the twentieth century. During this period, he argues, magazines and newspapers grew increasingly dependent on sales of advertising space, and this precipitated a widespread restructuring of the publishing industry. The advent of the airplane and skyscraper in 1920s and ‘30s America offered the population an entirely new way to look at the world: from above. The captivating image of an airplane flying over the rising metropolis led many Americans to believe a new civilization had dawned.
