Book Description
This handbook is volume II in a series collecting mathematical state-of-the-art surveys in the field of dynamical systems. Much of this field has developed from interactions with other areas of science, and this volume shows how concepts of dynamical systems further the understanding of mathematical issues that arise in applications. Although modeling issues are addressed, the central theme is the mathematically rigorous investigation of the resulting differential equations and their dynamic behavior. However, the authors and editors have made an effort to ensure readability on a non-technical level for mathematicians from other fields and for other scientists and engineers. The eighteen surveys collected here do not aspire to encyclopedic completeness, but present selected paradigms. The surveys are grouped into those emphasizing finite-dimensional methods, numerics, topological methods, and partial differential equations. Application areas include the dynamics of neural networks, fluid flows, nonlinear optics, and many others. While the survey articles can be read independently, they deeply share recurrent themes from dynamical systems. Attractors, bifurcations, center manifolds, dimension reduction, ergodicity, homoclinicity, hyperbolicity, invariant and inertial manifolds, normal forms, recurrence, shift dynamics, stability, to namejust a few, are ubiquitous dynamical concepts throughout the articles.

Book Description
This book is a tribute to Gianfranco Capriz on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. This book collects about twenty research papers written by world-leading scientists in the field of continuum thermomechanics. The authors discuss a number of different theories, classical and new. Moreover, general underlying themes are both the exploration of the limits of the continuum approach (as it was consolidated between the late '50s and the early '70s) and the study of those amendments and extensions that would hopefully allow to treat mathematically a host of real-life problems that have been proposed, but not yet adequately modelled, within materials science, structural optimisation, biosciences, medical engineering, superconductivity, etc. The reader will find displayed the recent progresses in modelling non-standard material structures.

Book Description
Chemical Technology is based on lectures the author gave at the Technische Hochschule of Karlsruhe and at the University of Freiburg. Part 1 of this book deals with chemical technology and describes subjects dealing with apparatus, unit operations, and chemical economics. The text reviews industrial chemical reactions, raw materials preparation for reaction, thermal and catalytic processes, and a history of chemical technology. This part also addresses transportation, storage of raw materials, and the design and construction of a chemical factory. Part 2 concerns special chemical technology, including topics such as raw material upgrading; processing of products in the chemical industry; and unit processes application toward consumer goods production. This part reviews materials sourcing from animals, minerals, and vegetables, such as processing of products from living organisms, the recovery of sugar, starch, and other carbohydrates. The book also reviews products of the chemical industry including low-molecular weight consumer goods, detergents, aromas, explosives, plastics, elastomers, synthetic leather, textile, and some building materials. Chemistry students, chemical and process technology students, and mechanical engineering students with interest in chemistry will find this book valuable.

Book Description
Kinetic theory provides a microscopic description of many observable, macroscopic processes and has a wide range of important applications in physics, astronomy, chemistry, and engineering. This powerful, theoretical framework allows a quantitative treatment of many non-equilibrium phenomena such as transport processes in classical and quantum fluids. This book describes in detail the Boltzmann equation theory, obtained in both traditional and modern ways. Applications and generalizations describing non-equilibrium processes in a variety of systems are also covered, including dilute and moderately dense gases, particles in random media, hard sphere crystals, condensed Bose-Einstein gases, and granular materials. Fluctuation phenomena in non-equilibrium fluids, and related non-analyticities in the hydrodynamic equations are also discussed in some detail. A thorough examination of many topics concerning time dependent phenomena in material systems, this book describes both current knowledge as well as future directions of the field.
