The report is concerned with thermal stress in an open, circular cylindrical shell with a circular hole. The shell is subjected to a stationary uniform heat flow and the condition that thermal insulation exists at the boundary of the hole. The stresses and deformation of the shell under the prescribed conditions are analyzed. The analysis is based on the method of superposition. The actual stresses in the shell may be considered as the sum of the following three parts: (a) stresses caused by the given heat flow in a similar shell without hole, (b) stresses in the shell caused by edge loads at the boundary of the hole and (c) stresses in the shell caused by the local disturbance of the heat flow near the hole. A method of obtaining numerical results is also outlined. (Author).

BS>Part I of this report describes the analysis of a cylindrical shell subjected to a temperature variation in the axial direction. This part is divided into two sections. Section 1 gives the formulas and the procedure for their application. ln Section 2, the derivations of the cylindrical shell formulas are given. A cylindrical shell subjected to a linear temperature variation through the thickness is considered in Part II. Part III cortains some sample problems which require the metheds of Parts I and II for their solutions. The thermal stresses induced in ring-reinforced oval cylindrical shells, subject to various heat inputs are presented. The problem is divided into two main sections: determination of the transient and steady-state temperature distribution on the oval shell, and calculation of the resulting thermal stresses. In the temperature problem, two heating rates are considered. One is a uniform linear heat transfer rate and the second is a step-wise constant rate in the circumferential direction. Throughout the analysis temperature distributions that are a function of the circumferential coordinate only are considered. (Author).
