The behavior of materials in the space environment continues to be a limiting technology for spacecraft and experiments. The thermal control surfaces experiment (TCSE) aboard the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) is the most comprehensive experiment flown to study the effects of the space environment on thermal control surfaces. Selected thermal control surfaces were exposed to the LDEF orbital environment and the effects of this exposure were measured. The TCSE combined in-space orbital measurements with pre and post-flight analyses of flight materials to determine the effects of long term space exposure. The TCSE experiment objective, method, and measurements are described along with the results of the initial materials analysis. The Prospero Thermal Control Surfaces Experiment was conceived as a method of investigating the behaviour of various thermal control surface materials in a space environment. This Report contains the results of laboratory tests on selected materials, the design and construction of the experiment and the analysis of data obtained from the flight of the Prospero spacecraft. It concludes that, while the experiment was not sensitive enough to measure changes in surface radiation properties accurately, it was possible to identify some surfaces as being satisfactory for use and reject others as being completely unsatisfactory. A résumé of the ascent environment of a spacecraft is presented, and a program to test the effects of that environment on candidate thermal control surfaces is outlined. Routine tests employ radiant heating in a reduced pressure environment. The apparatus and test criteria are described. Results of tests on materials considered for use on Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. (LMSC) spacecraft are presented. Criteria for material behavior are: the resultant alteration in emittance, solar absorptance, and mechanical stability. Failure modes are discussed. Conclusions are drawn regarding the behavior of various classes of materials in the ascent environment. The white solar reflector surfaces are most susceptible to damage. The best black paint surface tested performed adequately at temperatures in excess of 1000 F; the best white paint failed at temperatures above 700 F.

Experiments measuring the adhesion forces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions (10 (exp -10) torr) between a synthetic volcanic glass and commonly used space exploration materials have recently been described. The glass has a chemistry and surface structure typical of the lunar regolith. It was found that Van der Waals forces between the glass and common spacecraft materials was negligible. Charge transfer between the materials was induced by mechanically striking the spacecraft material pin against the glass plate. No measurable adhesion occurred when striking the highly conducting materials, however, on striking insulating dielectric materials the adhesion increased dramatically. This indicates that electrostatic forces dominate over Van der Waals forces under these conditions. The presence of small amounts of surface contaminants was found to lower adhesive forces by at least two orders of magnitude, and perhaps more. Both particle and space exploration material surfaces will be cleaned by the interaction with the solar wind and other energetic processes and stay clean because of the extremely high vacuum (10 (exp -12) torr) so the atomically clean adhesion values are probably the relevant ones for the lunar surface environment. These results are used to interpret the results of dust mitigation technology experiments utilizing textured surfaces, work function matching surfaces and brushing. They have also been used to reinterpret the results of the Apollo 14 Thermal Degradation Samples experiment.
