Excerpt from Theory of Flight Thirty years ago, in the summer of 1913, the author gave for the first time a university course on the mechanics of airplane ight. On the basis of these lectures and similar ones in the following years there developed a small elementary textbook Fluglehre, which was pub lished up to 1936 in five German editions and translated into several languages. When asked, about three years ago, to prepare an English edition the author found that a book of somewhat different type would be more useful under the present conditions. There already exist in this country several introductory texts on the mechanics of ight suitable for beginners. On the other hand, a mature student or an engineer well versed in the advanced stages of higher mathematics can readily work his way through the currently published research papers. An actual demand does, however, seem to exist for a book at an intermediate level, say, on the borderline between the last year of college and the first year of graduate work. It is assumed that the reader of the present text knows the principles of calculus and has some training in general mechanics inso far as the standard college education provides for these things. Only such parts of the theory of ight as are understandable at this level are presented in the book, the mathematical theory of uid mechanics thus being excluded.1 In order to keep the book within reasonable limits peripheral questions and many details in all topics have had to be omitted. Although the book is meant as a text for students and engineers, it was not the author's purpose to supply the reader with ready-made formulas in which to substitute design data. Nor was it his intention to give a collection of results that the candidate for a degree should memorize. The book aims, as did the Fluglehre, to develop interest in and understanding of the fundamental ideas that underlie the design and the operation of modern aircraft. The problems inserted at the ends of the sections, particularly those marked by an asterisk, are intended to give some direction to the efforts of any reader who would apply himself toward a better comprehension of the diversified questions involved in the theory of airplane ight. Excerpt from The Mechanics of the Aeroplane: A Study of the Principles of Flight Books on aeronautics may be roughly divided into two classes: the former written from an exclusively mathematical standpoint, and hence intended for but a small circle of readers; the latter, of a more elementary and popular character, do not, as a general rule, pretend to treat the problem of the aeroplane from its more serious technical and scientific aspects. The present work belongs to neither of these categories. Its purpose is to explain in terms as simple as possible, and with a minimum of formulae, the main principles of dynamic flight; to give the ordinary reader an insight into the various problems involved in the motion and equilibrium of the aeroplane; and to enable him to calculate in the simplest possible manner the various elements and conditions of flight. At the outset of this work it may be well to provide against possible misconception by explaining that it in no way aspires to present in final and conclusive form the intricate problems which constitute the complete theory of the aeroplane in view of the comparative youth of the science, such an attempt cannot be made for many years to come. That the results of his investigations were not entirely lost, however, is evident from Henson's machine of 1842, which was an even more astonishing anticipation of modern invention. Henson had not alone grasped the general principles but had also anticipated the actual construction of the aeroplanes that are performing such wonders in the air today. His machine was a monoplane and the wings with their ribbing and silk covering, stayed above and below to central posts placed in the main body, is almost identical with that of the French monoplane, the auxiliary trussing at the center of the planes constituting an arrangement employed on the Antoi nette. In addition to the main planes, there was a hinged rear tail, and a rudder for vertical and horizontal control, and there was like wise a three-wheel chassis on which the machine was designed to run when on the ground. As a parallel to the Wright starting rail, Henson proposed to employ an inclined plane, the run-down which would give the initial impulse necessary to launch the machine in the air. There is no evading the fundamental technology of any real subject, whether commercial, scientific, or political by nature; the reader must ever provide the interest if he would receive any return whatsoever for his purchase of the author's capital. In this case, as the capital is so small, the initial interest on the reader's part must be all the greater. The scope of the book is indicated by the arrangement and character of the chapters. I have divided the treatment of the subject into four main parts. The first part relates to the fundamental principles of flight; the second part is concerned with practical accomplishment; it refers in detail to the work of certain notable pioneers like Lilienthal and the Wrights, and also has chapters on modem development, as demonstrated, for example, at the military aeroplane trials of 1912. The third part is mainly historical, and is placed in this order so that the significance of the "milestones" may more readily be appreciated. The fourth part is a collection of appendices that have no exact sequence or proper place in the body of the book.
