Significant advances in our theoretical basis for understanding several physical processes related to dynamical phenomena on the sun were achieved. We have advanced a new model for spicules and fibrils. We have provided a simple physical view of resonance absorption of MHD surface waves; this allowed an approximate mathematical procedure for obtaining a wealth of new analytical results which we applied to coronal heating and p-mode absorption at magnetic regions. This volume, together with its two companion volumes, originated in a study commis sioned by the United States National Academy of Sciences on behalf of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. A committee composed of Tom Holzer, Dimitri Mihalas, Roger Ulrich and myself was asked to prepare a comprehensive review of current knowledge concerning the physics of the sun. We were fortunate in being able to persuade many distinguished scientists to gather their forces for the preparation of 21 separate chapters covering not only. solar physics but also relevant areas of astrophysics and solar-terrestrial relations. In proved necessary to divide the chapters into three separate volumes that cover three different aspects of solar physics. Volumes I and III are concerned with "The Solar Interior" and with "Astrophysics and Solar-Terrestrial Relations." This volume, devoted to "The Solar Atmosphere," covers not only the chromosphere and corona but also the principal phenomena usually referred to as "solar activity." The emphasis is on identifying and analyzing the relevant physical processes, but each chapter also contains a great deal of descriptive material.

This contract provided the opportunity to conduct research on several topics in the general areas of upper atmospheric physics, middle atmospheric physics, and solar physics. It also provided the opportunity to support future experimental programs within NRL's Space Physics Division such as RAIDS, SSULI, SUSIM, MAHRSI, and POAM. Support was in the form of laboratory work, data simulations, and development of algorithms for retrieving geophysical information from the listed instruments. On the SSULI task, e.g., extensive calculations of the dayglow from 834 A to 1800 A were made to estimate signal strengths and investigate the sensitivity of O+ 834 A to O+ in the F-region. Under the SUSIM task, an entirely new retrieval algorithm was developed which performs an inversion of the occultation data to determine number density profiles in a model independent manner. In addition, a great deal of work went into the development of an accurate forward model code which has been used extensively in the pre-flight phase to generate realistic simulations of the SUSIM occultation data sets. Under the task involving remote sensing at millimeter wavelengths, the META code has developed to the point where it provides accurate simulations of the ground based millimeter wave emission measurements being performed by NRL.
