Historians have made widespread use of diaries to tell the story of the Second World War in Europe but have paid little attention to personal accounts from the Asia-Pacific Theater. Writing War seeks to remedy this imbalance by examining over two hundred diaries, and many more letters, postcards, and memoirs, written by Chinese, Japanese, and American servicemen from 1937 to 1945, the period of total war in Asia and the Pacific. As he describes conflicts that have often been overlooked in the history of World War II, Aaron William Moore reflects on diaries as tools in the construction of modern identity, which is important to our understanding of history. Any discussion of war responsibility, Moore contends, requires us first to establish individuals as reasonably responsible for their actions. Diaries, in which men develop and assert their identities, prove immensely useful for this task. Tracing the evolution of diarists’ personal identities in conjunction with their battlefield experience, Moore explores how the language of the state, mass media, and military affected attitudes toward war, without determining them entirely. He looks at how propaganda worked to mobilize soldiers, and where it failed. And his comparison of the diaries of Japanese and American servicemen allows him to challenge the assumption that East Asian societies of this era were especially prone to totalitarianism. Moore follows the experience of soldiering into the postwar period as well, and considers how the continuing use of wartime language among veterans made their reintegration into society more difficult.

When the Japanese Empire went to war with the Allies in December 1941, it had already been fighting in China for 10 years. During that time it had conquered huge areas of China, and subjugated millions of people. The Japanese needed to control the Chinese population in these occupied territories, and for this reason they set up governments from amongst the leaders of the Chinese who were willing to cooperate with them. These so-called 'puppet' governments were designed to rule on behalf of the Japanese while firmly under their overall control. In turn, the puppet governments needed their own armed forces to help them maintain control over the populace and so they raised their own 'independent' armed forces. These puppet armies were large in number, reaching a total of well over 1 million before 1945. Although poorly armed and equipped, these forces had an influence on the Japanese war effort through sheer numbers.The Chinese puppet soldiers ranged from the well-drilled and trained regular Army of the Last Emperor of China, Pu Yi, who ruled the newly-formed state of Manchukuo, 1932-45, to the irregular Mongol cavalry who served alongside Japanese troops in the 'secret war' waged in the Mongolian hinterlands. The troops were dismissed as traitors by the Chinese fighting the Japanese, and they were equally despised by the Japanese themselves. The troops were motivated by a range of reasons, from simple survival to a loyalty to their commander. The fact that so many Chinese were willing to fight for the Japanese was embarrassing to all sides, and for this reason has been largely ignored in previous histories of the war in the East. In the first of a three-volume series, Philip Jowett tell the story of the Chinese who fought for the Japanese over a 14 year period. He describes in detail the organization, training, actions, uniforms and equipment of these forces, including detailed orders-of-battle. Volume 1 contains many rare and previously unpublished photos, as well as color plates illustrating the uniforms and insignia of the armies. The air forces and navies of these states are also described in detail, incl. color aircraft profiles. In a series of appendices, the author provides selected orders of battle as well as biographies of notable military commanders. This is a fascinating insight into a hitherto-neglected aspect of Second World War and Asian military history. FROM THE FOREWORD This publication is a compilation of articles originally published by the (British) Army Bureau of Current Affairs between 1942 and 1945. ABCA was 'created by the Army Council to "brief" officers for talks to their men on war topics and to provide them with informative "background" on varied aspects of the war.' Its "Current Affairs" and "War" series provided the basis for debate within groups of service personnel. The articles have been reproduced in chronological order of publication, but do not necessarily need to be read in that order. "The Japanese Way" and "How About Japan?," although they come chronologically later, provide an excellent overview of the history, religion, industry and society of Japan, how it came to be at war with China and the West, and its ultimate objectives. Other articles focus specifically on the Burma campaign, the Philippines, and Guadalcanal, in the latter of which ("Be mean, and kill 'em") there is a series of contributions from US servicemen on their experiences in fighting the Japanese. These were designed primarily as tips to British soldiers yet to face the Imperial Army. Despite the constant references to 'Japs' and the caricature illustrations of them in a couple of the pamphlets, the overall tone of the material conveys a grudging respect for the Japanese soldier and sympathy with the Japanese people generally. The blame for Japan's aggression is laid firmly at the door of the military who effectively had control of the government and Emperor. This collection of contemporary WWII writing gives a truly fascinating insight into how the British Army viewed the war in the Far East and provides an informative range of perspectives on the enemy from the Land of the Rising Sun.
