Book Description
Excerpt from The Workshops and Other Poems Clang! Clang! Clang! How the great hammers rang, With never a moment of quiet between! From morning to night They were swung by the might Of the strong arms, all brawny and blackened, I ween. For the clang! Clang! Clang! As it noisily rang, Seemed ever its deafening din to increase Till a fair lady cried, As she plaintively sighed, How I wish that its horrible clamor might cease! But soon came a day When the great workshops lay All silent and dim, like a giant asleep; And the strong arms that swung The great hammers now hung Like the sails of a vessel becalmed on the deep. For the clang! Clang! Clang! No longer it rang, And the stout heart grew faint, and the calm eye turn-cd wild; For what can be worse, Or more bitter a curse. We are accorded to matter in three dimensions - length, breadth and thickness. May there not be a fourth dimension, to which most of us are not accorded.2 May there not be those who are so accorded? May not the fourth dimension be the dimension towards which we are going 'l - The additional dimension to which we will be accorded after death l The dimension in which those of the great majority now have their being? I was relating how I had brought a ray of hope to a father, who had lost a daughter, by referring to the possibility of a fourth dimension of matter, to have a gentleman comment. Book Description
Excerpt from My Garden, and Other Poems John Gregory was born on the 14th of June, 1831, at Bideford, in Devon. His father was a merchant's clerk, and a man of considerable natural ability and thought, and of a deeply religious turn of mind. For fifty years he was a local preacher in connection with the Wesleyan Methodists, and a tablet to his memory was erected in the chapel where he usually officiated. His mother was the daughter of a Hartland peasant. The boy had but little schooling. At the age of eleven he was apprenticed to a shoemaker for the term of seven years, and whilst serving his time became acquainted with Edward Capern, a postman, who subsequently made a considerable reputation as a poet. Young Gregory now began to pave his way, and, with a brave heart, set out in pursuit of knowledge. After his hours of weary work he devoted what leisure he had to study, but he regarded all books as footnotes to the book of Nature. His apprenticeship served, Gregory came to Bristol, but in a few months lack of work drove him home again, where he continued to reside until 1852.
