Book Description
The mere mention of "Sunday" will immediately conjure up a rich mix of memories, associations, and ideas for most anyone of any age. Whatever we think of-be it attending church, reading a bulky newspaper, eating brunch, or watching football-Sunday occupies a unique place in Western civilization. But how did we come to have a day with such a singular set of traditions? Here, historian Craig Harline examines Sunday from its ancient beginnings to contemporary America in a fascinating blend of stories and analysis. For the earliest Christians, the first day of the week was a time to celebrate the liturgy, observe the Resurrection, and work. But over time, Sunday in the Western world took on still other meanings and rituals, especially in the addition of both rest and recreation to the day's activities. Harline illuminates these changes in enlightening profiles of Sunday in medieval Catholic England, Sunday in the Reformation, and Sunday in nineteenth-century France-home of the most envied and sometimes despised Sunday of the modern world. He continues with moving portraits of soldiers and civilians trying to observe Sunday during World War I, examines the quiet Sunday of England in the 1930s, and concludes with the convergence of various European traditions in the American Sunday, which also adds some distinctly original habits of its own, such as in the realms of commerce and professional sports. With engaging prose and scholarly integrity, "Sunday" is an entertaining and long-overdue look at a significant hallmark of Western culture.

Book Description
Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/sabbath_new_testament/ Many sincere Christians believe that the New Testament teaches that Christ brought to an end the principle and practice of Sabbath keeping, and instituted Sunday keeping instead. To test the validity of this popular view, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi has devoted many years of painstaking research in Vatican libraries in Rome, examining the earliest Christian documents. The results of his investigation are found in his dissertation first published in 1977 by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press, in Rome, Italy. In the book The Sabbath in the New Testament Dr. Bacchiocchi summarizes and updates his extensive research by presenting four basic reasons for his belief in the permanence of the principle and practice of Sabbath keeping in the New Testament. These reasons are presented in a simple and clear way which ordinary people can understand. In the second half of the book Dr. Bacchiocchi answers a wide variety of questions people have often asked him in conjunction with his popular Lord's Day Seminar. The questions deal with historical, theological and practical aspects of Sabbath keeping. This section, entitled "Answers to Questions," makes the book a most valuable reference manual to deal with the most frequently asked questions about the Sabbath. To the delight of many the new and enlarged edition includes also a chapter prepared by Mrs. Bacchiocchi which contains a selection of 20 of her family's favorite Italian Sabbath recipes. - Preface; Part I: VIEWS ON THE SABBATH IN THE NEW TESTAMENT; 1. Book Description
"Ryken's Worldly Saints offers a fine introduction to seventeenth-century Puritanism in its English and American contexts. The work is rich in quotations from Puritan worthies and is ideally suited to general readers who have not delved widely into Puritan literature. It will also be a source of information and inspiration to those who seek a clearer understanding of the Puritan roots of American Christianity." -Harry Stout, Yale University "...the typical Puritans were not wild men, fierce and freaky, religious fanatics and social extremists, but sober, conscientious, and cultured citizens, persons of principle, determined and disciplined excelling in the domestic virtues, and with no obvious shortcomings save a tendency to run to words when saying anything important, whether to God or to a man. At last the record has been put straight." -J.I. Packer, Regent College "Worldly Saints provides a revealing treasury of primary and secondary evidence for understanding the Puritans, who they were, what they believed, and how they acted. This is a book of value and interest for scholars and students, clergy and laity alike." -Roland Mushat Frye, University of Pennsylvania "A very persuasive...most interesting book...stuffed with quotations from Puritan sources, almost to the point of making it a mini-anthology." -Publishers Weekly "With Worldly Saints, Christians of all persuasions have a tool that provides ready access to the vast treasures of Puritan thought." -Christianity Today "Ryken writes with a vigor and enthusiasm that makes delightful reading-never a dull moment." -Fides et Historia "Worldly Saints provides a valuable picture of Puritan life and values. It should be useful for general readers as well as for students of history and literature." -Christianity and Literature
