Book Description
'The Wonders of Instinct: Chapters in the Psychology of Insects' is a whimsical yet scientifically accurate book about the habits of insects—a study of insect behavior. Instead of writing it in a dry, clinical manner; the author, Jean-Henri Fabre, chose to write it through a first-person perspective, best described as a written form of the modern-style narrated-nature documentary. For his contributions in the field of entomology, the study of insects, he is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology.

Book Description
The world's largest insect is a walking stick from Borneo. Including the legs, it is 20 inches (about 50 centimeters) long. The heaviest insect in the world is the African goliath beetle. Large goliath beetles can be 4 inches (10 centimeters) long and can weigh a quarter of a pound (110 grams). Already about 900,000 species of insects have been found and have received a name, but still many more insect species have to be discovered. The fastest insect is the dragonfly. The insects can reach a speed of about 58 km per hour. Many people in the world eat insects. In some countries there are farmers who produce insects and sell them as tasty snacks. There are several insects that can produce light, for example fireflies. Note that a firefly is not really a fly; it's a beetle.

Book Description
This is what I wished for, hoc erat in votis: a bit of land, oh, not so very large, but fenced in, to avoid the drawbacks of a public way; an abandoned, barren, sun-scorched bit of land, favoured by thistles and by Wasps and Bees. Here, without fear of being troubled by the passers-by, I could consult the Ammophila and the Sphex (two species of Digger-or Hunting-wasps.—Translator's Note.) and engage in that difficult conversation whose questions and answers have experiment for their language; here, without distant expeditions that take up my time, without tiring rambles that strain my nerves, I could contrive my plans of attack, lay my ambushes and watch their effects at every hour of the day. Hoc erat in votis. Yes, this was my wish, my dream, always cherished, always vanishing into the mists of the future.

Six Legs Better
Author: Charlotte Sleigh
Publisher: JHU Press
ISBN: 0801892147
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 512
Book Description
This “provocative, complex” cultural history examines how the study of ants influenced shifting perceptions of humanity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Times Literary Supplement, UK). Ants long have fascinated linguists, human sociologists, and even cyberneticians. At the end of the nineteenth century, ants seemed to be admirable models for human life and were praised for their work ethic, communitarianism, and apparent empathy. They provided a natural-theological lesson on the relative importance of humans within creation and inspired psychologists to investigate the question of instinct and its place in the life of higher animals and humans. By the 1930s, however, ants came to symbolize one of modernity’s deepest fears: the loss of selfhood. Researchers then viewed the ant colony as an unthinking mass, easily ruled and slavishly organized. In this volume, Charlotte Sleigh uses specific representations of ants within the field of entomology from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries to explore the broader role of metaphors in science and their often unpredictable translations. Six Legs Better demonstrates the remarkable historical role played by ants as a node where notions of animal, human, and automaton intersect.
