Unlikely friends, despicable villains, and deadly peril – can a renegade gang stop the Blackshirts sending orphans to Hitler? The Wonder Girls is a kick-ass historical adventure with kindness, inclusion and hope at its heart. ENGLAND 1936: The Blackshirts are marching and Londoners are on the streets resisting them. In the chaos, a terrified, golden-haired girl pulls street-thief Baby from certain death. But Blackshirts overpower them and seize the girl. Baby tracks the Blackshirts to the coast where she finds a railway carriage hidden in brambles, a gang of renegade girls and thirteen-year-old Ida, trying to protect her golden-haired little sister ... The Wonder Girls is a fast-paced, full-hearted, total romp of an adventure ... The story starts with Baby being saved from the crush of a Blackshirts’ march by a golden-haired angel of a girl, who promptly gets kidnapped by sinister grown-ups in a fancy car. Baby, fiercely loyal and warm-hearted, determines to save her Goldilocks girl; she and Fingers set off from London to the south coast town of Nettlefield, in hot pursuit of Baby’s saviour. Meanwhile, Ida is trying to come to terms with the fact her Mum is soon to die, while also worried sick about losing her little sister Bonnie to the terrifying and mysterious Nettlefield Grange Orphanage, run by Mrs Bullar. Alone, neither Baby nor Ida are equipped to deal with the reality of what’s going on in the orphanage. Together with the help of a cast of marvellously colourful characters, they might just stand a chance... Any child who loves stories of adventure, chutzpah and heart will rattle through this book and be desperate for more. In short, The Wonder Girls is a real winner of a book." Georgina Lippiet, in-common.co.uk ‘This story is full of heart racing moments, incredible bravery and girl power in the face of fascism... I was gripped from the first chapter and my heart was pounding, not daring to turn the page at some points but always feeling that I wanted more. It is a fabulous story and I have high hopes for it in this golden age of Children’s fiction. Erin Lyn Hamilton, myshelvesarefull.wordpress.com ‘an engaging and dramatic read which is crying out to be adapted for children’s TV’ Julie Ballard on Goodreads ‘I read an early draft of this & was BLOWN AWAY! Can’t wait to read the full story!’ Emma Carroll on Twitter ‘Glorious and life-affirming: girl power 1930s-style. These girls will wriggle their way into your heart.’ Sue Wallman, author, Egmont The Wonder Girls is a delightful adrenaline filled adventure that shines a light on a very dark aspect of British history whilst bringing a good dose of fun with its eccentric cast, yet not shying away from difficult themes. In The book J.M. Carr expertly balances the emotional personal stories of the individual characters and peril whilst maintaining a historical setting that is so real it is almost tangible. Sally Poyton, Space on the Bookshelf.blogspot.com ... it is the focus on family, friendship and loyalty that makes a lasting impression. Throughout the interwoven story lines of Baby, Fingers and and Sophie at the start and following Ida Barnes next, the whole tale is fundamentally warmhearted. Book Description
Experience the extraordinary story of a nearly forgotten American superstar athlete. Texas girl Babe Didrikson never tried a sport too tough and never met a hurdle too high. Despite attempts to keep women from competing, Babe achieved All-American status in basketball and won gold medals in track and field at the 1932 Olympics. Then Babe attempted to conquer golf. One of the founders of the LPGA, Babe won more consecutive tournaments than any golfer in history. At the height of her fame, she was diagnosed with cancer. Babe would then take her most daring step of all: go public and try to win again with the hope of inspiring the world. A rollicking saga, stretching across the first half of the 20th century, Wonder Girl is as fresh, heartfelt, and graceful as Babe herself.

Book Description
A cast of thousands, despicable villains and an unexpected reunion with disastrous consequences! ENGLAND 1937: 4000 child refugees from The Spanish Civil War are due to arrive at Southampton Docks . . . Sixteen-year-old aspiring doctor, Letitia, is determined to help with the rescue effort. Most of the children are taken to a camp, north of the town but some under the 'care' of a teacher called Easton Fitzgerald are billeted at Nettlefield Grange Orphanage. Baby is sure the Blackshirts are putting kids in peril again – have they jumped from the frying pan into the fire?Baby and the other Wonder Girls must work out what the fascists are really up to, and to prevent a Nazi invasion, persuade Letitia to value what she's actually good at. “This sequel is astounding! I read The Wonder Girls in 2019 and was floored by the plots and the characters. A diverse group of girls find family together within Nettleford(?) Orphanage. All from different backgrounds and experiences, these girls come together to fight a common enemy, Hitler’s Blackshirts. The town seems to be crawling with these Hitler supporters and though The Wonder Girls got rid of a few, The Wonder Girls Resist will see a new plot unfold and familiar trusted friends be doubted. New characters are introduced and quickly become part of the gang, foiling small parts of a larger plan. Each chapter enlightens the reader to the plots unfolding and the plans being created, highlighting the bravery of each young child, whether a refugee or orphan. They all gather together and work for the greater good. The characters are wonderfully written, especially the courage of each girl. They learn about their own capabilities and skills, while helping each other out of dangerous and plot thickening situations! I really like JM Carr’s style of writing and feel that she has created a fast paced adventure, with plenty of twists, turns and turncoats to keep the reader guessing. I like the perspective of this book on WWII and the role that ordinary citizens played when faced with a Hitler supporter in their own community. Often books set during the wars focus on the Blitz, the resistance movement or Holocaust. This small community is rocked in a different way and I feel that many readers will experience this new perspective and it will raise some questions about Blackshirts and their role.” Erin Lyn Hamilton, myshelvesarefull.com

Book Description
Michael Gurian, whose national bestseller The Wonder of Boys presented a radical and enlightening view of parenting sons, now offers a groundbreaking approach to raising daughters. In The Wonder of Girls, Gurian, himself the father of two girls, provides crucial information for fully understanding the basic nature of girls: up-to-date scientific research on female biology, hormones, and brain development and how they shape girls' interests, behavior, and relationships. He also offers insight into a culture mired in competition between traditionalism and feminism and a new vision that provides for the equal status of girls and women yet acknowledges their nature as complex and distinct from men. He explains what is "normal" for girls each year from birth to age 20; what developmental needs girls face in each stage; how to communicate effectively with girls; and how to cope with developmental crises such as early sexuality, eating disorders, parental divorce, and more. With personal insights, practical tips, real-life anecdotes, and accessible science, The Wonder of Girls creates a new parenting paradigm. Key elements include: a nature-based approach to why girls are the way they are the connection between the need for profound attachment and the physical and brain development of girls support for a girl's inherent need for intimacy tools to protect girls' self-esteem and emotional life a new approach to girls' character development and rites of passage. With this scientifically based developmental map of girlhood, Gurian equips parents with a comprehensive guide for raising daughters. Challenging our culture to examine and embrace a crucial piece of the puzzle missing thus far, The Wonder of Girls elevates the dialogue on parenthood.
