Book Description
Excerpt from The Whole French LanguageThe labours of philologists will then lose something of their importance. A few professional men, 0 eying their calling, will remain depositaries of the dialects of by-gone ages; as we now see antiquarians collect and religiously preserve the wrecks of former societies. To enumerate the facts on which I ground this prevision would be a superfluous digression from my subject. To those men who have bent their thoughts on Unity, I need not say that the unity of weight, of measure, and of language is as inevitable as the unity of mathematical laws. To those who judge with the heart, a guide more infallible than the understanding, I need not say that universal fraternity cannot be completely established on the globe, until it has overthrown the barriers which dialects, more efficient than mountains and seas, have set up between men. As, for the enthusiastic admirers of the past, or those optimists who, contented with the present, are averse to every improvement, I will not attempt to convince them; I should only expose myself to be regarded as a utopist and, besides, the time is not yet come to insist upon the subject.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This second part having been comp11ed with great attention to the best usa ges of pronunciation, it will be found of certain utility to the teacher, and is especially calculated to give a correct understanding of the French language, and, with the first part, constituting the whole of the present volume, is tended_ for the use of the student. It was my intention to have added third part, contain ing rules of Orthography and of Grammar, with numerous examples of their application, and I may with truth say, that in this portion of the work, I had thrown considera ble light into the fundamental causes of the various ortho graphical and grammatical accidents of languages 1n gene ral, and of the French in particular. But want of means has prevented me from accomplishing this desirable ob lect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Year In French The end aimed at by every student of a modern language should be not only to read it, but also to speak and write it correctly. As the knowledge of a language evidently consists of these three essential acquirements, to neglect one of them is a mistake that no serious argument can justify. Book Description
Excerpt from A New Method of Learning the French Language In Parts Second and Fourth, the practical predominates; in Parts Third and Fifth, the theoretical. They are so far independent of each other, that the several parts need not be studied in the order in which they stand. The arrangement, however, was suggested by a long course of experience, and adopted after mature delibera tion. The practical develops principles, elements, and facts, in natural succession, but without regard to scientific method; the theoretical embraces, in a connected view, and in systematic order, the cognate parts that have been studied separately. By this plan, the treatment of the verbs is presented to the mind, unembarrassed with other dimculties; the student, once familiar with their forms, may enter upon a course of reading-lessons, which adds variety to the exercises, and increases his interest in the study of the language. Book Description
Excerpt from The Essentials of the French Language This abridged French course was composed at the request and for the use of some Fren'ch students who wanted to learn, in a very limited space of time, all that is essential in the language and most commonly used in social and commercial relations. According to their information, existing French methods were either too elementary or too complicated, too incomplete or too voluminous. They wanted something short, clear, practical, substantial, and devoid, as much as possible, of pedantic technicalities. While in the state of manuscript, this little French course was studied by them and proved to be satisfactory. They found it easy to learn and interest ing, and, in a few months, were able to express themselves in French on many subjects of daily occurrence. Encouraged by their success, I showed my manuscript to pupils who had studied French with me for years with the aid of the old methods. All of them took a liking to my little essay and wanted to study it. Finally the conclusion was drawn that a book of this kind was needed in America, and I was advised to prepare it for print. Book Description
A New York Review Books Original During the eighteenth century, from the death of Louis XIV until the Revolution, French culture set the standard for all of Europe. In Sweden, Austria, Italy, Spain, England, Russia, and Germany, among kings and queens, diplomats, military leaders, writers, aristocrats, and artists, French was the universal language of politics and intellectual life. In When the World Spoke French, Marc Fumaroli presents a gallery of portraits of Europeans and Americans who conversed and corresponded in French, along with excerpts from their letters or other writings. These men and women, despite their differences, were all irresistibly attracted to the ideal of human happiness inspired by the Enlightenment, whose capital was Paris and whose king was Voltaire. Whether they were in Paris or far away, speaking French connected them in spirit with all those who desired to emulate Parisian tastes, style of life, and social pleasures. Their stories are testaments to the appeal of that famous “sweetness of life” nourished by France and its language.

Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in French: Or a Practical Introduction to Reading, Writing, and Speaking the French Language Although this little book can very well be dispensed with by persons passed their childhood, yet it is believed that learners generally will find their satisfaction in the study increased, and their ultimate proficiency advanced, by commencing with it. Those, also, who find it neces sary, in a short time, to obtain such an acquaintance with the language as may be of practical use, without master ing the whole grammar, will find this book the best fitted for their purpose. Although containing but sixty-four short and simple lessons, it teaches all those principles of the language which are the most commonly used in conversation; and he who has studied it thoroughly can communicate his ideas orally in the language, and make his way in French society with little feeling of incon venience.
