Book Description
But we loved that old ROOSEVELT & when he signed that Order 8802 a whole bunch of us got in the service. But you see I didn't trust them too much, & there was a lot of money to be made with all the work that the war caused. I just met this old girl that came up here from New Orleans, because, well, I thought that she was dirt poor & came up to make some money & find a husband. She was the prettiest thing that we ever seen around here, & we started courting almost as soon as she got off the bus ( he chuckled to himself). "Her name was Antoinette. She had the softest light real near white skin that I had ever seen even on white folks, long Black shining hair, and a very pretty smile, you see. She loved to laugh, a&nd I did as much as I could to make her laugh. If she wanted a clown, I sure damned was going to be one. She always spoke in a near whisper in that half French way that they speak down there in the French Quarter down there, & sometimes we didn't know what the hell she was talking about. But she was so damned pretty that I really didn't care since she was my girl. Hell, after a couple of weeks of being together, she started talking that talk to me & whatever she was saying sounded so good to me that I was agreeing all over myself! "She got so excited that we didn't go to see the show like we was suppose to & spent the night together. We made good music that night, if you know what I mean? That was the summer of forty-three, and I was so happy that I didn't know what to do with myself. The next morning she told me that she had to send her Mama a telegram to let her know that we was coming down so she could meet me & show me off to her family. "That's when I realized that the woman was talking about marriage! Well, I tell you that I was scared to death, because I never thought about marrying her or anybody else at the time, you see! But she was such a pretty thing that I said to myself "BOY, AS UGLY AS YOU ARE, YOU AIN'T GOING TO DO MUCH BETTER."

Respectable Street
Author: Richard Paul
Publisher: Field Books

Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
Picture it: a street lined with perfectly manicured lawns, stately homes, and residents who wouldn't dream of leaving the house without their matching garden gloves and a carefully cultivated air of superiority. Sound familiar? Well, it's not quite as idyllic as it sounds. This is Respectable Street, a community that, let's just say, takes the whole "keeping up appearances" thing to a whole new level. The neighbors on Respectable Street are, for the most part, good people. They bake delicious cookies, volunteer at the local animal shelter, and have a knack for finding the most obscure gardening magazines. They're also, perhaps, a bit too comfortable in their routines, a tad too quick to judge, and a little too fond of whispering behind their hands whenever something new comes along. And then there's Greg. He's not from Respectable Street, but he's living there now, in a house that used to be the envy of the neighborhood before it was remodeled with a bizarre and slightly unsettling color scheme. Greg has a past, a bit of a reputation, and he doesn't exactly blend in with the crowd. But even in the most respectable of neighborhoods, life doesn't always unfold according to plan. Things get messy, people make mistakes, and secrets have a way of bubbling to the surface like a forgotten can of soda left in the sun. So, join us as we dive into the chaotic, hilarious, and unexpectedly heartwarming world of Respectable Street. We'll meet the residents, witness their quirks, and maybe even learn a thing or two about ourselves along the way. Just remember, it's not always about the outward appearances, it's about the human connections, the unspoken truths, and the unexpected laughter that binds us together, even when we're trying to pretend we're something we're not.

Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 0857206095
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 315
Book Description
The Road of Bonesis the story of Russia's greatest road. For over 200 years, the route of the Vladimirka Road has been at the centre of the nation's history, having witnessed everything from the first human footsteps to the rise of Putin and his oil-rich oligarchy. Tsars, wars, famine and wealth: all have crossed and travelled this road, but no-one has ever told its story. In pursuit of the sights, sounds and voices both past and present, Jeremy Poolman travels the Vladimirka. Both epic and intimate, The Road of Bones is a record of his travels - but much more. It looks into the hearts and reveals the histories of those whose lives have been changed by what is known by many as simply The Greatest of Roads. This is a book about life and about death and about the strength of will it takes to celebrate the former while living in the shadow of the latter. Anecdotal and epic, The Road of Bones follows the author's journey along this road, into the past and back again. The book takes as its compass both the voices of history and those of today and draws a map of the cities and steppes of the Russian people's battered but ultimately indefatigable spirit.
