Book Description
By tracing the evolving worldview of Vietnamese communists over 80 years as they led Vietnam through wars, social revolution, and peaceful development, this book shows the depth and resilience of their commitment to the communist utopia in their foreign policy. Unearthing new material from Vietnamese archives and publications, this book challenges the conventional scholarship and the popular image of the Vietnamese revolution and the Vietnam War as being driven solely by patriotic inspirations. The revolution not only saw successes in defeating foreign intervention, but also failures in bringing peace and development to Vietnam. This was, and is, the real tragedy of Vietnam. Spanning the entire history of the Vietnamese revolution and its aftermath, this book examines its leaders' early rise to power, the tumult of three decades of war with France, the US, and China, and the stubborn legacies left behind which remain in Vietnam today.

Book Description
This essay goes beyong the legend of Ho Chi Minh and his disciples. Behind the facade of unity, the Vietnamese communist leadership has for years been torn by a prolonged crisis, sustained by two major ideological factions and later amplified by the development of the Sino-Soviet rift. Ho Chi Minh was far from being a dictator the calibre of Tito, for example. Rather, his style of collective leadership has contributed to the institutionalization of factionalism in Hanoi. His policy of equidistance between Moscow and Beijing became more or less a necessity for the leadership's unity. This book addresses itself to the question: Did Ho Chi Minh leave behind a unified party? The book provides an understanding of one of the most enigmatic - and the most long-lasting - leaderships in the communist annals, and examines the current state of the Hanoi regime.

Book Description
Vietnam's Communist leaders, having gained control over the South in the spring of 1975, immediately attempted to establish socialism in the reunified country. But economic failure, foreign policy crises, and popular resistance to dogmatic programs undermined the regime's efforts, and in 1986 the Vietnamese Communist Party embarked on a new era of doi moi (renovation). Today, the country's leadership is moving toward a more market-oriented approach while maintaining the ultimate goal of building a socialist society. Success is by no means guaranteed.Offering an expanded and thoroughly revised edition of his successful text, William Duiker traces the course of Vietnamese history from its origins to the end of the Vietnam War. He considers the country's political structure, foreign relations, economic situation, social problems, and cultural heritage, analyzing the diverse aspects of Vietnamese society and revealing how they have been affected by a generation of conflict and socialist transformation. The author concludes with a discussion of the dynamic factors underlying the Vietnamese revolution, looking at how the changes have affected both the region and course of the global Cold War.

Book Description
General Giap is undoubtedly one of the foremost practitioners of insurgency and revolutionary war. He has been called by some, the Vietnamese Napoleon. The issue is: What are the factors which have gained him such a reputation? What experiences have influenced his life and caused him to develop the strategy and tactics used the past 25 years in Vietnam? An extensive literature search was made to trace his life’s history and to determine what factors have caused him to be as he is. The study examined his early life, civilian education, and use within the Vietnamese Communist Party, military training and experience. No effort was made to give a detailed analysis of any campaign or battle. A final evaluation was made that although his contribution on to the two wars in Indochina was great, evidence does not support placing him with such men as Mao, Guderian, or Napoleon. He has contributed little which is new to strategic or tactical principle & but rather has demonstrated the ability to apply well those principles developed by others.
