Book Description
Excerpt from The Victorian Chancellors, Vol. 2 of 2 The material available for the memoirs contained in this volume varies greatly both in quality and quantity. No biographer has been found as yet for Lord St. Leonards or Lord Cranworth, and the sources of information, with regard to the latter especially, are scanty in the extreme. Thanks, however, to the kindness of Dr. Tristram, K.C., who has long been associated with the Sugden family, I have had access to some correspondence between Lord St. Leonards and the great lawyers and statesmen who were his contemporaries. In the case of Lord Chelmsford I have been more fortunate. He left behind him an autobiography which covered in outline the whole of his private and professional career, and gives at considerable length the details of the more celebrated cases in which he was engaged when at the Bar. From this manuscript, which has not hitherto, I believe, been read outside the family circle, the present Lord Chelmsford has most generously allowed me to draw, a permission of which I have availed myself to the full. I have also to thank him for leave to reproduce the portrait of his grandfather which appears in these pages. Book Description
Excerpt from The Victorian Chancellors, Vol. 1 of 2: Lord Lyndhurst, Lord Brougham, Lord Cottenham, Lord Truro Lord Brougham has fared rather better at his suc cessor's hands the tone of the Life is less spiteful, and there is abundance Of amusing anecdote, coming in some cases from sources which are entitled to credit. It cannot, however, be accepted as a satisfactory picture of one who, with all his failings, was a very great man. Lord Brougham foresaw his fate, and attempted to forestall and mitigate it by preparing his auto biography for publication. The result Of his labours, which appeared in can only be utilised with ex treme caution, and it has verified the prediction of a con temporary critic that while unlikely to be extensively read, it will probably prevent any really good life of Lord Brougham from being written.' It contains letters and documents that are of lasting value; but at the best of times Lord Brougham's recollection of events differed widely from the impression retained by other actors and eyewitnesses. At the date when this autobiographical fragment - for it stops short at the end of 1834 - was put together, neither his mental nor his physical powers were equal to the effort. The arrangement is chaotic, and a vast amount of superfluous matter is introduced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Lives of the and Keepers of the Great Seal of Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Reign of Queen Victoria A quarter or a century has elapsed since I commenced writing 'The Lives of the Lord Chancellors of Ireland.' I had been but a short time called to the Bar. and my avocations did not prevent me from engaging in this work. I had read with great pleasure the first series of Lord Campbell's 'Lives of the Lord Chancellors of England, ' published in 1845, and was desirous of compiling a similar work in reference to the Lord Chancellors and Keepers of the Great Seal of Ireland. The office of Lord Chancellor has existed in this country for many centuries; able and distinguished men many of these Chancellors were, and they exercised great influence upon the destinies of the kingdom. I felt anxious to render my work useful to the statesman as well as to the professional reader, and as, from the want of contemporary reports, the legal materials for the Lives of the early Chancellors were very meagre, I tried to make these memoirs interesting by narrating some of the stirring historic events in which they took part. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ambassadors, Vol. 2 IT was n't the first time Strether had sat alone in the great dim church - still less was it the first of his giving himself up, so far as conditions permitted, to its beneficent action on his nerves. He had been to Notre Dame with Waymarsh, he had been there with Miss Gostrey, he had been there with Chad Newsome, and had found the place, even in company, such a refuge from the obsession of his problem that, with renewed pressure from that source, he had not um naturally recurred to a remedy meeting the case, for the moment, so indirectly, no doubt, but so relievingly. He was conscious enough that it was only for the mo ment, but good moments if he could call them good still had their value for a man who by this time struck himself as living almost disgracefully from hand to mouth. Having so well learnt the way, he had lately made the pilgrimage more than once by himself - had quite stolen off, taking an unnoticed chance and making no point of speaking of the adventure when restored to his friends.
