Book Description
Set in California, rebellious young Roldan Castanada is resignedly awaiting his call up to the army. A brave man, it isn’t fear which makes him angry about the situation but rather the beckoning grey drudgery of an enforced army life. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Roldan runs away and persuades his friend Adan to join him. Out in the wilds of California the two men encounter all kinds of dangers as they attempt to flee. A fascinating, beautifully descriptive tale from the famous author Gertrude Atherton. Gertrude Atherton (1857-1948) was an American novelist, short story writer and early feminist. Born in California, Gertrude attended schools in California and Kentucky and became widely read. She married George H.B. Atherton in 1876, and lived with him and his mother in San Francisco, where they had two children. Atherton struggled with married life, her husband did not support her writing ambitions and Gertrude found life as a wife and mother stifling. When her husband died at sea in 1887, Atherton felt free to pursue her burgeoning career as an author and went on to publish over 50 novels. She is best known for her California series of novels which explored the social history of California and included popular works such as ‘The Californians’ and the controversial ‘Black Oxen’ which was adapted into a silent movie in 1923. Feminist themes and strong female characters are common in her novels. She died in San Francisco in 1948.

Book Description
The second novel in the masterful tetralogy, The Sea of Fertility—and “a modern masterpiece” (The Baltimore Sun)—narrated by a judge in Osaka who believes he has met the successive reincarnation of his childhood friend Kiyoaki Matsugae. In 1932, Shigeuki Honda has become a judge in Osaka. Convinced that a young rightist revolutionary, Isao, is the reincarnation of his friend Kiyoaki, Honda commits himself to saving the youth from an untimely death. Isao, driven to patriotic fanaticism by a father who instilled in him the ethos of the ancient samurai, organizes a violent plot against the new industrialists who he believes are usurping the Emperor’s rightful power and threatening the very integrity of the nation. Runaway Horses is the chronicle of a conspiracy — a novel about the roots and nature of Japanese fanaticism in the years that led to war.

Book Description
Freya searches for a missing Valkyrie in this second book of an exciting series that School Library Journal described as perfect for “those looking for Rick Riordan read-alikes.” Valkyrie: Norse Goddess. Reaper of Souls. Defender of the Weak. But could she also start a war? In the world of Asgard, living among Odin, Thor, and Loki are the Valkyries of legend. Norse goddesses, reapers of souls from human battlefields—they have the power to cause death with just one touch. Freya is a Valkyrie—but she has not followed in the footsteps of the legends before her. She has been to the World of Man to befriend humans—and not to reap their souls. Now she must return to the human realm on a new quest to track down the runaway Valkyrie of legend. There she will discover a dark secret that leads her to the Land of the Frost Giants where she must take on new enemies. But this time she has friends to rely on, and lots more to gain.
