The complexity of the refugee predicament is outlined and current trends in refugee mental health treatment are surveyed. The structure of Heartland Health Outreach's International FACES program, as well as the school and home environment of participating youths is detailed. The specific 12 session intervention outlined in this paper is aimed at helping adolescents negotiate the process of acculturation to life in the United States by providing adjunctive art therapy sessions to refugee adolescents participating in their school's Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program. Alternating between individual and family art therapy sessions, this intervention enables youth to process the CBITS curriculum as well as their experiences and relationships in the United States while encouraging the creation of a family narrative through various art therapy directives. Suggestions for method implementation and further study are discussed.
