"The English Department conducts, as do all other academic departments at the University of Tennessee at Martin which do not have external accrediting agencies, an internally staffed self examination every five years. The official purpose of these self examinations is to allow departments to look closely and systematically at the various components of their programs, to make some decisions about which of those components have been successful and which need changing, and to begin th eprocess of making changes. Most members of the English Department feel this to be a worthy purpose and have participated in the completion of this document in that spirit....The guidelines used in this self study were developed by The Tennessee Higher Educaton Commissionand augmented by the UTM Office of Academic Affairs and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. .."
