The United States in the Twentieth Century (Classic Reprint)
Author: Pierre Leroy-Beaulieu
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330522325
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 428
Book Description
Excerpt from The United States in the Twentieth Century It is always venturesome to present to the people of a country a book on that country written by a foreigner, and it is particularly so when the country in question is the United States, where political, economic and social conditions differ so greatly from those obtaining in Europe. I trust, however, that the reader who may be disposed to regard such a work as presumptuous will bear in mind that the present book is based on a study of American documents, that it is a book dealing with facts, and, as was said in, the preface to the French edition, that it is primarily an inventory of the economic resources of the United States at the beginning of the twentieth century. All the facts and figures cited are taken from the "Report on the Twelfth Census" and from other authoritative official and private American publications, and thus possess strong guarantees of trustworthiness. But it must be admitted that everything changes and grows so quickly in America that, brief as is the time which has elapsed since the book was written, some of the statistics presented do not exactly correspond to the state of affairs today. Nor is the author unaware that complete exactitude would in any event be out of the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Something New Under the Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World (The Global Century Series)
Author: J. R. McNeill
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393075893
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 452
Book Description
"One of those rare books that’s both sweeping and specific, scholarly and readable…What makes the book stand out is its wealth of historical detail." —Elizabeth Kolbert, The New Yorker The history of the twentieth century is most often told through its world wars, the rise and fall of communism, or its economic upheavals. In his startling book, J. R. McNeill gives us our first general account of what may prove to be the most significant dimension of the twentieth century: its environmental history. To a degree unprecedented in human history, we have refashioned the earth's air, water, and soil, and the biosphere of which we are a part. Based on exhaustive research, McNeill's story—a compelling blend of anecdotes, data, and shrewd analysis—never preaches: it is our definitive account. This is a volume in The Global Century Series (general editor, Paul Kennedy).

American Law in the Twentieth Century
Author: Lawrence Meir Friedman
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300102992
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1468
Book Description
American law in the twentieth century describes the explosion of law over the past century into almost every aspect of American life. Since 1900 the center of legal gravity in the United States has shifted from the state to the federal government, with the creation of agencies and programs ranging from Social Security to the Securities Exchange Commission to the Food and Drug Administration. Major demographic changes have spurred legal developments in such areas as family law and immigration law. Dramatic advances in technology have placed new demands on the legal system in fields ranging from automobile regulation to intellectual property. Throughout the book, Friedman focuses on the social context of American law. He explores the extent to which transformations in the legal order have resulted from the social upheavals of the twentieth century--including two world wars, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, and the sexual revolution. Friedman also discusses the international context of American law: what has the American legal system drawn from other countries? And in an age of global dominance, what impact has the American legal system had abroad? This engrossing book chronicles a century of revolutionary change within a legal system that has come to affect us all.
