Book Description
It would go through several editions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and be translated into French, German, Dutch, and Greek. Out of print for more than a hundred years, this influential work is once again available due to the efforts of historian Norman Gelb. Written in a charmingly unpretentious style, and illustrated with reproduction of the original map and copper plates appearing in the original 1778 edition, Carver's book offers a unique firsthand account of an American continent untouched by European influence. But above all, Carver's depictions of the Naudowessies, with whom he spent an entire winter and among whom he was to become an honorary chief, provides one of the first in-depth accounts of day-to-day life in a Native American culture.

Book Description
Photostatic copies, probably from 1920-1936, of original ms. copies of Jonathan Carver's journals, describing his travels between May 1766 and July 1768, throughout the Great Lakes Regions, from Michillimackinac to the Mississippi River, and along the Wisconsin, Fox, St. Pierre, and Chippewa Rivers. Ten leaves of "survey journals" summarize different portions of Carver's trip, such as Detroit-Michilimackinac, Lake Michigan to Green Bay, up the Fox River, and along the Wisconsin River, including, in table form, the day, date, course, distance traveled in miles, and observations on the route. Entries describe the geography, exploration history, and flora and fauna of the area, and customs and religious practices of the Naudowessie, Saugies, Ottigaumies, Winnebagoes, Chippeways, and Menomonees. There is also a Naudowessie vocabulary list. The ms. concludes as Carver returns to Boston, via Detroit and Philadelphia in July 1768. Vol. 2 contains the same journal as v. 1, although in a more publishable form.

Book Description
Located just southwest of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Carver County was established by the Minnesota Territorial Legislature in 1855. The Minnesota and the South Fork of the Crow Rivers flow through this Big Woods county of Minnesota. Named after explorer Capt. Jonathan Carver and built on a predominantly agrarian culture, it boasts one of the richest farmlands in the state. Arrival of the railroads resulted in prosperous new industries and businesses and made it a popular resort destination. In the 1890s, the abundance of dairy farms and creameries earned it the nickname, the "Golden Buckle of the Dairy Belt." Many local farmers such as Andrew Peterson, Wendelin Grimm, and Henry Lyman became nationally recognized for their horticultural contributions and achievements. Hundreds of vintage photographs and postcards that depict everyday life in Carver County through the 1950s were collected and researched. This work is a tribute to the citizens of Carver County, whose pride in their rich history inspired this book.
