Excerpt: ...Oh, let us pray God to make us realise, more and more, by His Spirit, the wonders of our Lord's divinity, Col. ii. 9; that knowing Him to be thus the fountain of peace, 2 Thess. ii. 16, 17; the object of our faith, John xiv. 1; 1 Pet. ii. 6; and able to do all things, Phil. iii. 21; Rev. i. 8, we may be sure of defence and comfort in every danger and adversity. "THE ROCK." Learn, Ps. lxii. 5-8. Passages to be referred to, --Exod. xvii. 1-7; Ps. lxii.; Isa. xxxii.; 1 Cor. x. 1-13. To enter fully into the figure of a Rock as representing our Blessed Lord, we must carry our thoughts away to eastern lands and Bible associations. What refreshing shade and s/ielter does it afford the traveller from the scorching heat of the desert sun? Isa. xxxii. 2; Ps. xciv. 22. Higher than the one seeking refuge, it wards off heat and storm, Ps. lxi. 1-4; and so Jesus, Matt. i. 20. What a strong fcncndation is it also whereon to build, Ps. xcii. 13-15. It is chosen by the wise man for his house, Matt. vii. 24, 25; and so Jesus, 1 Cor. iii. 10, 11; Acts iv. 11,12; see Matt. xvi. 18. But there was one very remarkable rock of which we read in the history of Israel. God appointed it as the source of comfort to His people in their wilderness life, Exod. xvii. 5, 6. There were always streams flowing from it, Ps. lyxxvii. 7, xxxvi. 8. It followed them wherever they were led in their wanderings, Isa. xlix. 10; and that Rock was Christ, 1 Cor. x. 4; Isa. xxvi. 4 (margin). Four points will make this plain. 1. God was to be on the rock. Exod. xvii. 6, "I will stand before thee there upon the rock." In vain should we look for supplies from it, unless God were in the rock. "God was in Christ," reconciling, &c., 2 Cor. v. 19; 1 Tim. ill....
