Book Description
Excerpt from The Tennyson Epoch The series of which this volume is the ninth may he said to have three objects: First, to teach the history of our literature in a rational and orderly manner; second, to illuminate the history of England by exhibiting the thoughts of its men of letters in their own words; and, third, to display, as if in a gallery, some specimens of the inheritance into which every English-reading boy and girl has entered. It has been too long the practice to teach English literature in handbooks which give only the briefest examples, if any, of the works they profess to describe; and our many excellent school anthologies, from their want of a definite historical arrangement, and the absence of prose, fail almost entirely to give a connected view of the development of our language. Now, the history of our literature, falling, as it undoubtedly does, into a series of well-marked periods of excellence, appears to lend itself peculiarly to the historical treatment suggested by the word 'epoch.' In this volume, for reasons given in the Introduction, I have been compelled to include a period which really contains two epochs. My general principles of selection are three - the intrinsic merit and interest of the piece, its convenience for use in schools, and its ability to stand by itself without great detriment from the absence of context. Also I avoid those works which are likely to be read elsewhere. For this reason Dickens, Thackeray, and the novelists generally, are here omitted. Book Description
Excerpt from Tennyson: A Modern Portrait MY aim in this book has been to create a living portrait of a poet and a man as I have conceived him after a close study both of his life and his poetry and of their intimate reactions. For twenty years of middle life, the period contained in Part II. And some of Part III. Of this book, Tenny son's poetry supplies the more vital and explicit evidence. In youth and in later life it exists rather as the implicit habit of his life, from which, therefore, I have been careful not to disentangle it. Book Description
Excerpt from A Concordance to the Entire Works of Alfred Tennyson A few poems have no distinct titles 3 several are addressed, To and the heading, is common to one or two others. To avoid confusion, these are referred to in the following pages by the first word or two of each poem. A plan of the work was first submitted to Messrs Moxon in the spring of 1868, and received from them the most prompt and courteous cousi deration. A specimen which had been prepared met with their approval, and I was requested by them to undertake the completion of the scheme. This date, which under ordinary circumstances would have been a matter of trivial importance, may possibly, in the light of more recent events, possess a certain interest. Book Description
Excerpt from Tennyson I know not how it is, but I feel isolated here in the midst of society. The country is so disgustingly level, the revelry of the place so monotonous, the studies of the University so uninteresting, so much matter of fact. None but dry-headed. Book Description
This book explores Tennyson's representation of rapture as a radical mechanism of transformation--theological, social, political, or personal--and as a figure for critical processes in his own poetics. Offering a new approach to reading Victorian dramatic monologues, Pearsall probes the complex aims of these performances, showing how speakers' ambitions are both articulated in, and attained through, their consequential speech.
