Book Description
First published in 1997, this thesis is about the temporal interpretation of noun phrases. Although the temporal interpretation of verbs is by no means a settled issue today, all of us have at least a vague idea of how it works: sentences contain verbs and tenses and sometimes temporal adverbials, and in some way or other the tense of a clause tells us roughly whether the state of affairs denoted by the main predicate of the clause—or at least a crucial part of it—is located at a past, present, or future time.

The TSQL2 Temporal Query Language
Author: Richard T. Snodgrass
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461522897
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 675
Book Description
Temporal databases have been an active research topic for at least fifteen years. During this time, several dozen temporal query languages have been proposed. Many within the temporal database research community perceived that the time had come to consolidate approaches to temporal data models and calculus based query languages, to achieve a consensus query language and associated data model upon which future research can be based. While there were many query language proposals, with a diversity of language and modeling constructs, common themes kept resurfacing. However, the community was quite frag mented, with each research project being based on a particular and different set of assumptions and approaches. Often these assumptions were not germane to the research per se, but were made simply because the research required a data model or query language with certain characteristics, with the partic ular one chosen rather arbitrarily. It would be better in such circumstances for research projects to choose the same language. Unfortunately, no existing language had attracted a following large enough to become the one of choice. In April, 1992 Richard Snodgrass circulated a white paper that proposed that a temporal extension to SQL be produced by the research community. Shortly thereafter, the temporal database community organized the "ARPA/NSF In ternational Workshop on an Infrastructure for Temporal Databases," which was held in Arlington, TX, in June, 1993.

Book Description
Since the dawn of the modern era, mankind has dreamed about the possibility of traversing the bounds of linear time, to explore the dark mysteries of pre-history or seek out the wild possibilities of the far future in person. This collection of stories does the next best thing, allowing readers to dream of the possibilities of such a theoretical trip. The Temporal Element contains stories all about traveling through time, and not in the natural way. From spell-casting wizards, to mad scientists, and government-sanctioned time agencies, here you will find an exceptional selection of stories about people traveling beyond their native time. Temporal Databases
Author: Dr. Kamran Ahsan & Prativadi Vijay
Publisher: Booktango
ISBN: 1468948210
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 127
Book Description
Need for database reasonably increased as the data manipulation changes and leverage for storage has become essential. Temporal database has been one of the special kinds in the field of database. According to the concept of time, stamping various models has emerged and temporal models namely; McKenzie, BenZvi’s, and non-temporal models namely; Colby, Deshpande and Larson’s model has grabbed unique attention towards in this area of temporal database. Reliable and Enhanced stratum middleware management capabilities enable the temporal queries for ease in transactions. Richness in point based and maximum timestamp approaches provide high indexing mechanisms, which make efficient storage of data in tree structure format. The proposed prototype model uses Temporal Relational Algebra and TSQL2 declarative language, which display the past, present and future related data. The inclusion of T4SQL instead of TSQL2, Temporal Multi-Secure Database and spatio-temporal database model can make this model stronger than present and make it work more efficiently.

The Temporal Dimension of Justice
Author: Santiago Truccone
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3111446379
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
Should historical injustices always be repaired? Upon scrutinising public institutions and present holdings, it becomes evident that many are partially the result of past injustices. Consequently, the imperative to rectify and repair historical injustices emerges. However, as circumstances change over time and these changes affect justice, the argument for repairing historical injustices becomes more intricate. The distributive and reparative aspects of justice may be in tension with each other. Possible tensions between these aspects of justice are assessed by discussing the thesis about the supersession of historical injustices. Different facets of the supersession thesis are evaluated in two contexts. The first context, explored in the initial part of the book, examines whether and, if so, under what conditions, post-colonial injustices against 19th-century Latin American indigenous peoples should be repaired. The second context, explored later in the book, assesses how climate burdens should be distributed globally and how to respond to potential injustices arising from departures from a fair climate transition towards net-zero CO2 emissions societies. The book demonstrates that repairing historical injustices is compatible with the imperatives of distributive justice.

This is an introductory text to the science of neurobiology, describing animal nervous systems, what they consist of, how they work, and how they are studied. Unlike many other neurobiology texts, considerable discussion is given to both human and non-human nervous systems. Written in an easy-to-read style, it will be useful for both biology and medical students. It provides the opportunity for self-testing at the end of each chapter, with objectives and questions. A CD-ROM entitled 'The Human Brain' (ISBN 3-540-14666-0) has been produced to accompany this text, and can be purchased either separately or together with the book (ISBN 3-540-63778-8).

Temporal Asymmetries in Philosophy and Psychology
Author: Christoph Hoerl
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0198862903
Category : Attitude (Psychology)
Languages : en
Pages : 315
Book Description
Humans' attitudes towards an event often vary depending on whether the event has already happened or has yet to take place. The dread felt at the thought of a forthcoming exam turns into relief once it is over. Recent research in psychology also shows that people value past events less than future ones, such as offering less pay for work already carried out than for the same work to be carried out in the future. This volume brings together philosophers and psychologists with a shared interest in such psychological past/future asymmetries. It asks questions such as: What different kinds of psychological past/future asymmetries are there, and how are they related? Under what conditions do humans exhibit them? To what extent do they reflect features of time itself, or particular beliefs people have about time? Are they rational, or at least rationally permissible, or should we aspire to being temporally neutral? What exactly does temporal neutrality consist of?
