Book Description
Excerpt from The Teeth and Their Care This pamphlet is written with the object of showing (i) the import ance of the teeth, (2) the advantages to be gained by an intelligent knowledge of these organs, and (3) how to care for them. Air, water and food are the three requisites to human life. Air and water almost in the states in which they come from nature can be used to nourish life. Food, on the other hand, must undergo many complex processes before it can become a par-t of the human body. It follows that the organs which are provided to change food from that condition in which nature supplies it, into the condition in which it can be used to nourish the body and sustain life, must be able to do their work properly, otherwise health is impossible. Therefore it is plainly seen that the condition of the teeth, standing at the very gateway of life and health, is a matter of vital importance. Excerpt from The Care of the Teeth Because I believe that the decay of teeth may in a great measure be prevented I have written this little book. I trust that the suggestions it contains will be found practical and of easy application. I trust that they will commend themselves to the mothers of growing children, to physicians who have an opportunity to influence the lives of these little ones, and to the dentists in whose hands the re sponsibility for the care of the teeth finally reposes. Book Description
Excerpt from The Dentist: A Popular Treatise on the Care of the Teeth When we consider the vastly greater value of health, is it not strangely inconsistent that it is not made as much a subject of study as mathematics or music? What an immensely greater proportion of time, thought, care, is given to dress, than to health. Such folly is only equalled by charging the Lord with our ailments, which charge is an insult to. Common-sense, and a reproach to our Maker. When we say that sometimes circumstances for the time being are beyond our control; and that there may be a special interposition of Providence in any given case; we have said all we are war ranted in saying, and perhaps more than we know of either proposition. Let it be clearly understood, then, that we start Out with the conviction that the evils to which the teeth are subject are as much within our control as any other human affairs. Book Description
Excerpt from Diseases of the Teeth: A Paper Read Before the Cook Co. Medical Society at Chicago, and Published at Their Request I take it for granted, you do not expect me to describe the details of operative dentistry, in which you could have but little interest; I shall, therefore, confine my remarks to the nature and causes of some of the diseases of the teeth, and their effect upon the health of patients - a subject which requires the watchful care of the physician not less than the skill of the dentist. When a physician listens to a lecture on medical jurisprudence, he does not expect to become a lawyer; he simply desires to become familiar with some of those points of law which describe his duties and the mutual rights of himself and patients. On this principle, I take it for granted you do not desire to learn dentistry, but rather to gain that information which will enable you to avoid doing injury to the teeth of your patient, and also to judge when it is necessary to call to your aid the services of a competent dentist. I will pass over the subject of first dentition with the remark, that where you are called to cut the gums, in order to facilitate this physiological process, the duty might, with propriety, be performed by us, for most of the diseases of these organs are the result of bad habits, formed in early life; so we cannot too early impress on the parent's mind the necessity of care for their children's teeth, and this can be done by no one so well as the dentist. Book Description
Excerpt from The Human Teeth: Their Developement, Importance to Health, and Means of Preservation IT is a truth unfortunately too well known, that comparatively few retain their teeth in a sound and healthy condition even to middle age: while many, ere they have passed the bloom of youth, loose their teeth. That they were intended by an All-wise Creator to endure and fulfill their office as long as the other parts of our physical organization, is obvious, for the simple reason that they are not only necessary, but indispensable, to the maintenance of the system in full and healthful vigor. That the science of Dentistry is adequate to the grand achieve ment of the preservation of the human teeth, we believe - when its resources are fully tested, and applied in time - In Time, - as soon as disease makes its appearance, however minute. The oh jcet of the present pages is to give you such information as shall enable you to take care of your own teeth, and when the assistance of art becomes necessary, to distinguish between the scientific, honest operator, and the pretender, the pseudo dentist. The qualifications of a Dentist, are. Anatomy, Physiology, Sur gery, Pathology, and Therapeutics, particularly so, for as the teeth, gums, and alveoli are concerned, together with all the dis eases to which they are subject, and the best course of treatment, the mechanical resources of the science, and acute manual dexter ity in their application to the teeth, to which if we add that he must be a skillful chemist, and a good and honest man, we have his character in full. Book Description
Excerpt from Irregularities of the Teeth and Their Treatment More than thirty years ago, an extensive dental experience convinced me that in developmental processes the face, nose, jaws and teeth were more involved than the rest of the body, and were, therefore, under the laws of economy of growth, hence most involved in pathologic Change. This, as now gen erally recognized, is underlain by developmental states, dis torted into excess or diminution. Evolution or development proceeds from the indefinite simple to the definite complex with a resultant saving in expenditure of force. As embryo logic development in man proceeds from the simple cell to a union of cells forming structures, organs, and finally the body which these unite to form, two processes take part in it: degeneration of cell functions to secure greater special ization in the organs they form, and degeneration in these organs for greater accomplishment by the body of certain functions with less waste or force. Evolution of the body as a whole is aided by these degeneracies. When degeneracy diminishes lower structures for the advantage of the higher, evolution is the type of progress; when degeneracy attacks the higher structures for the benefit of the lower, as in para sites, degeneracy is the type oi progress.
