A History of the Synoptic Problem, by David Laird Dungan, is an accessible, academic study of a question that has needled readers of the New Testament since before the Bible was canonized: How does one reconcile the different accounts of Jesus's life given by the four gospels? Today the most highly publicized answer to this question is the one offered by John Dominic Crossan and the Jesus Seminar, who seek to reconcile the differences among the gospels by designating some events and statements in the gospels historically true and others false. There are lots of other ways to explore the synoptic problem, however, and Dungan provides a clear and lively history of the strategies employed by Origen, Augustine, Erasmus, Spinoza, Locke, and others. Dungan's method is to break the synoptic problem down into its corollary questions: Which gospels should be considered in the debate? Which text of each gospel should be considered? And how should one read the Bible in general and the gospels in particular? Dungan's interest in these questions is not merely literary; he also delves into the political and economic agendas that have influenced biblical interpretation. In this regard, the most interesting and original connection he makes is to explain the relationship between the rise of the modern historical-critical method of reading scripture (asking who wrote the books of the Bible, when, how, and for whom) and the creation and maintenance of political democracy--and furthermore, the ways in which fundamentalist "literal" readings of Scripture serve the same goal. Dungan's own investment in debates on the synoptic problem is shot through with an appealing humility about the stakes of the debate. "At its deepest level, the Synoptic Problem is not a scientific 'problem'," he writes. "[T]he quest for the correct solution to the Synoptic Problem, like the Church's quest for the correct canon of the Gospels, and the correct text of the Gospels, and the correct way to interpret the Gospels, is a vital aspect of the Church's perennial quest for the Word of Life."

This book explores the Matthean Posteriority Hypothesis (MPH), a largely neglected solution to the Synoptic Problem which holds that the author of the Gospel of Luke used the Gospel of Mark as a source, and that the author of the Gospel of Matthew used both the Gospel of Mark and the Gospel of Luke as sources. MacEwen begins with a survey of the scholars who have defended various forms of the MPH. Chapter 2 discusses two key lines of evidence which support the MPH. The first line of evidence is textual - demonstrating that Matthew could have known the contents of Luke's Gospel beyond merely the double tradition material. The second line of evidence, involving a study of strings of verbatim agreements in the Gospels, supports the view that Matthew depended directly on Luke. Chapter 3 explores evidence and arguments which can be seen as problematic for the MPH. MacEwen concludes that the MPH has been neither definitely proved nor disproved, and deserves further scholarly scrutiny.

The Synoptic Problem has tantalized scholars for almost the whole history of the Christian Church. What is the relationship between the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. Who depended upon whom and what other resources did they have. What was Q and what happened to it? As far as this author is aware, in the the vast number of suggested solutions the Gospel of John has rarely, if ever, been considered as part of the process. It appears that that is where we have gone wrong but he (i.e. this author) would not have come to the conclusion he has apart from a cross-pollination of ideas between two previous books, 'The Amazing Structure of the Gospel of John' and 'Redating the Revelation.' Indeed, these three works form a trilogy, each dealing with their own issues but each supporting the others. This present volume can be read alone but is probably best read after one or both of the others. It contains an historical reconstruction with literary evidence to support it but without the historical corroboration which is found in 'Redating the Revelation.' Nevertheless, the author believes that here, at last, the solution to the Synoptic Problem has come to light. What is revealed is a very natural progression, especially for Jewish minds, from Mark to John and then to Matthew and Luke. In the process an apostolic gospel - started but abandoned - is uncovered and new light is thrown on the writing of The Acts of the Apostles.
