Book Description
Excerpt from The Surveyor and Municipal and County Engineer, Vol. 41: January 5 to June 28, 1912 Rent Roda - The rent roll will have at its left-hand margin 3 column into which already have been written or stamped consecutive numbers beginning at 1 and ending at and neither address nor name need be written in the roll. Following the marginal numbers from left to right the double pages of the rent roll are ruled in four groups of columns headed First, Second, Third and Fourth Quarters, and containing, as sub-headings, arrears (brought forward), water rate, payments, allowances, and voids for each quarter, with a space at the right-hand edge of the book in which to write a reference number to next year's rent roll for arrears carried forward. In this manner each rent roll deals with one year, and may conveniently contain marginal numbers and be of such size as may be kept in a small safe. Each double page of a rent roll is ruled horizontally, with a space at the foot of each column for totals. Rent Roll Summary. - A similarly ruled book may be used as a rent roll summary, with marginal numbers indicating the successive pages of a rent roll, the columns of which are added up quarterly and their totals on each page entered in the summary, where they are again totalled so as to show quarterly the credit and debit accounts between the water authority and its consumers. Meter Supply Rent Rolls - In the meter supply rent rolls the entries under the heading gallons con sumed are obtained from the meter reading books and the charges for the previous quarter entered in the appropriate column. Reference to meter reading books is made below. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ...From experiments made by testing the currents of air at such surface ventilators and in the sewers, I have found these to be in the same direction as t-he flow of sewage, especially where the sewers are only on a slight incline; but where the gradients are steep, the currents of air are generally in the opposite direction to the flow. In the town of Leeds, about the year 1867, in the neighbourhood of Heading1ey--a district at an altitude of about 200 ft. above the level of the main sewers of the town to which it was connected--diphtheria and throat disease were prevalent, which were attributed to emanations of sewer air passing up to this higher district; but at that time the system of disconnecting the house drains from main sewers was not instituted. There are other similar instances which have prevailed throughout the country. It therefore follows that where upcast shafts are introduced the flow of sewer air should be locked off at certain distances in the seweri.e., at every angle or manhole in its course--by means of aluminium valves made to form two sections, so that the lower section will admit of only the dry weather flow of sewage passing through it (which is the time when sewers most require to be ventilated), and the upper portion to admit of passing the augmented flow of sewage and water. The above matters refer particularly to main sewers, but t-here is the question of ventilating the house drains, which of course must be secured, although the main sewers, especially in undulating districts, may be made comparatively free from foul emanations. lt isproposed by some municipal engineers that the trap generally known as " Buchan's" trap, and also the intercepting chamber, should be retained to shut off the...
