Book Description
Excerpt from The Sun Dial, Vol. 8: May, 1934 As commencement approaches each Of us looks forward to it with feelings mingled with joy, eagerness, and sadness - joy be cause of what we have attained, eagerness because of the holi day activities that await us, and sadness because Of separation from those whom we love. Commencement is one of the most thrilling events of our lives. It is a time in which we must choose a vocation or-our life's work. Up to this time we have been preparing ourselves to face higher and more definite aims. Our school aims were attained by the influence and guidance Of our friends and instructors. Since we will soon be only one amongst the masses, our attainments will be reached only by building upon the foundation that has been laid for us and by living up to the ideals that have been set before us, both Of which are strongly characterized in our school seal, Strength, Beauty, Truth - TO be and not to Seem. As we set out to accomplish our tasks many fascinating but shallow pleasures will ever confront us to draw us toward the downward road. How can we overcome such temptations unless we are strong? We must endeavor to keep our bodies strong and healthy, but above all let us keep strong in mind and will. Let us be strong enough to say no when the crowd accepts, to stand firm when others plunge blindly or heedlessly on, and to step forward when Others shrink. Beauty is a characteristic all of us may have. True beauty is of the soul, but there can also be a genuine physical beauty for usually our inward feelings are revealed through our outward appearances. Beauty is also strongly revealed through unselfish acts. All along the way there are many who are downcast and discouraged. A few words of cheer, and deeds of kindness will do miracles toward beautifying their lives and ours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Living in a world circumscribed by up-to-the-minute news and electronic tools we barely master before they are out-of-date, we attempt to shield ourselves from environmental events which threaten to overturn our constructed reality. Naturally, in such fast-paced and topsy-turvy surroundings we watch the sky and earth for signs of regularity; looking to the changing seasons for hope and rejuvenation, and seeking out the voices of those who speak of constancy in the changes of the natural world. Hal Borland was such a voice. Every week, beginning in 1941, in the editorial pages of The New York Times he would speak of living on the land—this natural world we all try to understand. In this collection of 365 of his essays, arranged daily within the twelve months, he writes with a familiarity of the ways of the country that is at once humble and resiliently knowledgeable. In Sundial of the Seasons you will find page-long ruminations on such topics as “Fog” (“a unique blend of mood and weather“), “The Bumblebee” (“Bumblebees tolerate man, up to a point”), “Dandelions” (“Neither flood nor drouth seems to discourage it”), and “Fishing” (“The fish caught are only a lesser part of the catch”), all in celebration of the everyday events of life in the country. Begin each day with the gentle wit and wisdom of the person who, for nearly four decades, wrote his “outdoor editorials” in an engaging and inimitable fashion eagerly read by thousands.

Book Description
The Prosciutto Sundial is the first comprehensive study of the sundial in the shape of a miniature prosciutto from the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum from its rediscovery in 1755 to modern times. Drawing on contemporary correspondence and manuscripts, early philological and scientific assessments, and later published accounts, it catalogs the many attempts by scholars and lay people alike to understand how it functioned. It explains the significance of its context in the Villa and, through the results of empirical analysis using a 3D model, highlights the remarkable accuracy of this unique ancient timepiece.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Sun Dial, Vol. 3: May 29, 1926 On September 8th our school opened with an enrollment of 100 splendid girls and boys, all ready for work as evidenced by the look on their faces, and this readiness has been kept up all through the year. For the whole student body this has indeed been a happy year. We have worked and played together, and the fine Christian fellowship has meant much to all of us. The spirit of service and helpfulness has been predominant and we have grown closer to each other. As we come to the close of the year, we look back and think of those we selected to guide our Student Body during 1925-26, our Student Body officers.
