Book Description
Excerpt from The Study of Shakespeare For some fifteen years I have conducted classes in the study of Shakespeare at the University of Indiana. I early found that great advantage was derived from an intimate knowledge of the social conditions that obtained at the time the plays were written. My attempt to furnish some assistance in this direction by the publication of an account of Shakespeare's London and of the people of Eliza beth's generation has given me confidence in the preparation of a handbook designed differently from many now in use. Though criticism of the plays forms the larger part of the following pages, I have had no intention of writing a volume of criticism. The book is not intended to be read on its independent merits, but in conjunction with a study of the texts. Though I hope it will be of interest to those already familiar with the plays of Shakespeare, it is primarily ad dressed to students. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Study Shakespeare A great drama is, in one respect, like a stained glass window in a cathedral. If one views the window from the outside he sees colors that are blurred, figures that are indistinct, and vague in outline. In order to perceive the harmony of the colors, the symmetry of the figures, the perfection and beauty of the window as a whole, the beholder must enter the cathedral, and view the window from the inside. Likewise to study a great drama successfully, to perceive and appreciate its symmetry, its unity, its power, its grandeur, it must be studied from the inside. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Shakespeare Already in 1598, when Shakespeare was but 34 years of age, a clergyman, Francis Meres, educated at the University of Cam bridge, in a work entitled Palladis Tamia, ranked Shakespeare with the greatest poets and dramatists of Greece and Rome. He would hardly have done this if Shakespeare was so obscure and so little estimated at the time as to cause such a judgment as he expresses, to be laughed at. Meres, as his book shows, was a man of great scholastic learning; and scholastic learning in those days meant a reverential estimate Of the great classics of Greece and Rome. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare: A Study There is probably no artist whose greatness has more stood in the way of his fit appreciation than has been the case with Shakespeare. On one hand and the other he has cast a mist that obtrudes between the eye of the beholder and his own proper person and achievement. The splendour of his stature, the breadth of his outlook, the strange quality of his vision, partly account for this. For die understanding being a limited instrument, all things that transcend the reason pass the limitations of its function. A chorus of voices, from the company of his contemporaries until this present hour of grace, have acclaimed him as the only utterance of Nature. So quick are men to take up any case that has been raised, that this universality of acclaim may by no means necessarily mean the truth of the thing testified; nevertheless, we feel the truth of it, and in no way is the truth better tokened than by the very similar attitude that is adopted both towards Shakespeare and towards Nature. In both we feel a synthesis, yet cannot think it out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Studies in Shakespeare Many letters have come to me during the last few years asking what seems to me a very strange question - How to read Shakespeare. My answer would naturally be: the way to read Shakespeare is - to read him. The rest follows as matter of course. If, not having read before, you read anywhere, you will know a new delight; you will read more; you will go on; in your eager reading you will consume the book. Having read all, you will read again, and now will begin to ponder, and compare, and analyze, and seek to fathom; and having got thus far, you will have found an occupation which lights with pleasure the whole of your leisure life. This seems to me to be the natural way of reading Shakespeare. This is the way in which I have found that most of the truest lovers of Shakespeare came to know him, to delight in him, and finally to wait upon him with a kind of intellectual worship. It is hard for these men to apprehend that there arc others not without intelligence and education, and who read, who have not read Shakespeare, or who having read a little of him do not read more. But there are such men; and there arc still many more such women. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to Shakespeare The advances made in Shakespearean scholarship within the last half-dozen years seem to justify the writing of another manual for school and college use. The studies of Wallace in the life-records, of Lounsbury in the history of editions, of Pollard and Greg in early quartos, of Lee upon the First Folio, of Albright and others upon the Elizabethan Theater, as well as valuable monographs on individual plays have all appeared since the last Shakespeare manual was prepared. This little volume aims to present what may be necessary for the majority of classes, as a background upon which may be begun the study and reading of the plays. Critical comment on individual plays has been added, in the hope that it may stimulate interest in other plays than those assigned for study. Chapters I, VIII, IX, X, and XIII are the work of Professor MacCracken; chapters V, VI, VII, XII, and XIV are by Professor Pierce; and chapters II, III, IV, and XI are by Dr. Durham. The authors have, however, united in the criticism and the revision of every chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
