Book Description
Excerpt from The Great French Painters: And the Evolution of French Painting From 1830 to the Present Day Ome explanation will be necessary to justify the composition of this book. Its programme is vast; it is to compress into a rapid sketch seventy years that have given to the French School some of its greatest masters and an imposing number of artists of high merit. In what spirit, in what order are we to consider them? This, for the sake of clearness, had better be defined at the outset. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern French Painters: Illustrated With Over 100 Plates It is too early yet to inquire whether, among the artists here under consideration, there are some who may prove some day the peers of those great names. But of one thing I feel certain: if the not insignificant period of artistic history of which this book treats has brought forth one or several artists worthy of those Masters, it is among those I have studied here that he or they will be found. Book Description
Excerpt from Stories of the French Artists From Clouet to Delacroix IN no country, perhaps, has art reflected the life and character of the nation to the extent that it has done in France, from which it follows that French art can never, except in certain of its phases, be so universally acceptable as that of Italy. And this because Italian art had a world-wide message to deliver, a message which has moulded thought and custom, and has done more to shape the destiny of modern art and thought than any other since that of the Greeks. A full-blooded and masculine art, whose fol lowers were not afraid to invade the highest realms of religious idealism and symbolism, and yet could grasp, as many of the Venetians did, the stern facts of materialism, was destined to. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Art: Modern Art French painting, for a hundred years, has aecom plished the same task. It is still misunderstood, especially by the French. It is one of the miracles of history, comparable to the most surprising. It has produced ten men of genius, more than the great century of Holland, or of Flanders, or of Spain, as many as the great centuries Of Italy. It appeared precisely on the morrow of the spread of revolution over Europe, offering to souls waiting in silence the power of liberation which the march of the republican armies brought to the legitimate appetites of the peoples and to the ideas of their shepherds. It is thanks to that march that it appeared in France and not in some other place, as it was thanks to the struggle of Germany to regain possession of herself from Napoleon, that the great German music, through Richard Wagner, closed its heroic cycle. The explosion Of sentiment, so long deferred, employs color as its expression. Conquered Europe and the Orient, faintly in view, tumultuously enter the sensuous emotion of the French. The Romantic dream and classical realism clash and mingle in France, where Italy and Germany meet for the third time. And it is here that the Renaissance of the south and the Renaissance of the north confront each other to affirm a definitive accord. Book Description
Excerpt from Études in Modern French Art Go see the drawings by Raphael in the Louvre; see how he attaches his figure together at the knees and shoulders and hips; how careful he is to insist on this continuity of the form; how every bone hangs by a string to some other bone; and how careful he is to express this dragging and weight of the form. I have never seen a drawing by Gerome which did not insist on the same quality of nature. He may violently bend the joint of a figure, but what he insists on is the flow of it, not the break of it. This continuity is one of the great traits of a figure by Gerome; another is, that when the conditions of the picture do not give a chance to tell all the facts about a figure, and when some have to be expressed and others omitted, he expresses the facts of the mechanism of the human frame, so that the figure, however slight, is a viable machine. He has sometimes shown a peculiar reticence in stating the facts about a figure, reducing it to its necessary parts; these slighted or subordinate figures remind me strangely of Egyptian images, and have something of the same dignity; an Egyptian figure always seems to say that the artist was capable of expressing more if he chose, but preferred to hold his tongue; the facts of anatomy seem to be all there, only enclosed in a sort of envelope; and the figure is sure to be not a bundle of limbs, but an unity, depending upon itself from head to foot. This summary treatment, perhaps inspired by his love for Egyptian art, is successfully practiced alone by Gerome among modern painters.
