But none of these texts makes it sufficiently clear to the youth of the country that the improvement in food plants and the productivity of the land are among the greatest factors in the building of a civilization. The purpose of The Story of Corn is to combine certain fundamental principles of geography and agriculture and treat them historically in order that the youth may appreciate the tremendous importance of agriculture in the history of the race. A complete history of agriculture would make a volume too large and too technical for grammar-grade or high-school pupils. Therefore the cereals, with special emphasis on Indian corn, have been chosen as the theme for this book.
