Book Description
At a certain point in my life I became fed up with the Equine industry, I didn't like the way people treated horses, I didn't like the way people talked about horses and I didn't like the way people looked at horses. In despair and heart broke over the loss of my first love I gradually came to see horses in a new and different light, they became a canvas for me, there movement a form of art and the work I put in a practice of art, an expression of self. This book strives to be a clinical discussion of art and art theory in the same vein as it's name sake, the classic treaties by Xenophon. I do not expect the reader to finish this book and start up a career as a colt starter, yet I hope the reader finishes this book and and finds themselves compelled to study the lines of there horse, drawn to observe the movement of the eye and ear, staggered by the dimensional depth of each foot fall. Were I to wake and find myself in some strange land that had no horses I would first find myself a pen and pencil and draw myself a horse to look at.

The Blind Colt (80th Anniversary Edition)
Author: Glen Rounds
Publisher: Holiday House
ISBN: 0823443531
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Can a young blind horse survive in the badlands of Montana? Find out in this beautiful new edition of a classic American tale. Now celebrating its 80th anniversary with beautifully redesigned new edition featuring lots of extras, The Blind Colt is a timeless tale of survival and friendship. This classic volume now features an appreciation by Matt Myers, a piece from author Glen Rounds on his inspiration for the story, and facts and resources about wild mustangs today. In the badlands, where the ground is soft but the slopes are steep and the vegetation is scarce, it can be difficult for a wild horse to survive. Even more so if that horse is blind. But this young colt has his strong mare of a mother looking out for him, and his other senses help him smell the friendly prairie dogs, feel for rough terrain, and hear whenever wolves draw near-- sometimes well before anyone else in his herd. That's not all. A boy named Whitey, about ten years old, and his ranch-owning Uncle Torwal watch from the sidelines whenever the colt and his herd pass through the plains near their home. Whitey, especially, hopes the young colt grows strong, just as he hopes they might get a chance to meet someday. And when a rough winter starts to settle in, he might just get his wish. This classic of children's literature in the tradition of War Horse, The Black Stallion, and Misty of Chincoteague comes from one of America's master storytellers. Glen Rounds grew up in the Dakota badlands, and drew from details from his own life on a ranch to depict one little colt's struggle to make it through the winter.

Samuel Colt
Author: Herbert G. Houze
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300111339
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
The fascinating story of the American inventor and manufacturer who perfected the revolver Samuel Colt (1814-1862) first patented his "Colt" revolver in 1835 and thereby redefined the architecture of handguns. This stunning book is the first to present in detail the evolution of his most famous invention and to document the unsurpassed Colt firearms collections held by the Wadsworth Atheneum. Colt designed his revolvers with an artistic sensibility--paying particular attention to form and beauty and juxtaposing colors and finishes to heighten the visual effects. He was also one of the first American manufacturers to secure celebrity endorsements and to commission paintings by renowned artists like George Catlin to promote his arms. Colt's standards for excellence, industrial foresight, and quest for market domination are explored in light of primary documents that reveal his constant battles to protect his patents. Essays discuss Colt's personal collection of historic firearms as well as the memorial collection of Colt-manufactured firearms, the relationship between art and commerce as they pertain to the inventor's career, and his international celebrity. Richly illustrated and beautifully produced, this volume presents the artistry of the firearms that Colt worked so diligently to perfect--as well as his promotional abilities that made a tremendous impact on American culture.

Out of the Clouds
Author: Linda Carroll
Publisher: Hachette Books
ISBN: 0316432210
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
In the bestselling tradition ofthe The Eighty-Dollar Champion, the propulsive, inspiring Cinderella story of Stymie, an unwanted Thoroughbred, and Hirsch Jacobs, the once dirt-poor trainer who bought the colt on the cheap and molded him into the most popular horse of his time and the richest racehorse the world had ever seen. In the wake of World War II, as turmoil and chaos were giving way to a spirit of optimism, Americans were looking for inspiration and role models showing that it was possible to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top-and they found it in Stymie, the failed racehorse plucked from the discard heap by trainer Hirsch Jacobs. Like Stymie, Jacobs was a commoner in "The Sport of Kings," a dirt-poor Brooklyn city slicker who forged an unlikely career as racing's winningest trainer by buying cheap, unsound nags and magically transforming them into winners. The $1,500 pittance Jacobs paid to claim Stymie became history's biggest bargain as the ultimate iron horse went on to run a whopping 131 races and win 25 stakes, becoming the first Thoroughbred ever to earn more than $900,000. The Cinderella champion nicknamed "The People's Horse" captivated the masses with his rousing charge-from-behind stretch runs, his gritty blue-collar work ethic, and his rags-to-riches success story. In a golden age when horse racing rivaled baseball and boxing as America's most popular pastime, he was every bit as inspiring a sports hero as Joe DiMaggio and Joe Louis. Taking readers on a crowd-pleasing ride with Stymie and Jacobs, Out of the Clouds -- the winner of the Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award -- unwinds a real-life Horatio Alger tale of a dauntless team and its working-class fans who lived vicariously through the stouthearted little colt they embraced as their own.
