Book Description
William Law is best remembered today for his Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life. To those interested in his spirituality, however, other works have greater impact, in particular The Spirit of Prayer and The Spirit of Love, which are considered the finest and most appealing. In the years in which they were written, his vision had reached its fullest and most characteristic development, and his literary power was at its height. It is in these books that the profound influence of Jacob Boehme can be most clearly seen. His great synthesis of the mystical outpourings and orthodox Christian theology, provide an English spiritual classic. Law's understanding and interpretation of mysticism was more original than traditional, being dynamic and creative. He believed in the life of God working from within, and the flame of divine love being a link with and an understanding of God. He conceived that mysticism was a matter of life, that relied on willing rather than knowing, and that ultimately rested on trust in God. Despite holding no official position he was widely regarded in his own time and later as a spiritual guide, and his trilogy The Spirit of Prayer, The Spirit of Love and The Way to Divine Knowledge was the mature expression of his theology and religion.

Book Description
The Spirit of Love and The Spirit of Prayer are two of William Law's best known texts for Christians seeking guidance on their faith and inspiration in their everyday lives. The first work takes the form of a dialogue between three men - Theogenes, Eusebius, and Theophilus, who discuss the nature of love in humanity. The trio discuss love in relation to the other human emotions and experiences, followed by the qualities of the love which man expresses to God his deity, and Jesus Christ as the Lord and savior of all men. To better understand the love of God, the three create many hypothetical scenarios involving the behavior of individuals. They also find agreement on what circumstances that love, and the associated phenomena of forgiveness, may arise. Frequent references made to holy scripture which the three conversation partners have at hand.

Book Description
Grow closer to God through six weeks of prayer focused on a specific spiritual topic. Since their original release in the late 1980s, the Take and Receive prayer-book series has sold more than 150,000 copies, and its five themed books are hailed as classics in the Ignatian prayer tradition. The first two books in the series are being repackaged and reprinted by Loyola Press. Love: A Guide for Prayer and Forgiveness: A Guide for Prayer provide topic-based opportunities for people to grow deeper in their relationship with God through prayer. The theme of each volume directly correlates with a segment of the Spiritual Exercises, though no previous experience with the Exercises is needed to benefit from these books. Covering 36 days over a six-week period, each day offers scriptural passages with commentary, followed by a suggested approach to prayer for that day. Especially helpful is a section at the beginning of the book that explains the different types of solitary prayer that readers will be asked to engage in throughout the six weeks, such as meditation, contemplation, and centering prayer. Ideal for all who desire a closer relationship with God, these books help us reimagine what it means to pray and help us see with new eyes God’s presence and activity in our daily lives.

Frequent references made to holy scripture which the three conversation partners have at hand. In The Spirit of Prayer, William Law investigates the relationship between man and the world around him. He at first prepares the reader for his arguments in favor of prayer as a part of Christian life, before expounding on the heavenly principles of the Lord and his angels. William Law was a lifelong servant of the Church of England, spending years in the service of the church. He famously lost his post at Emmanuel College at Cambridge University, as he felt speaking an oath to the new king George I was a violation of his conscience. Unafraid of controversy, he authored famous critiques to the Bishop of Bangor, while other works have been cited as prime examples of the ecumenical relationship between Anglicanism and Catholicism.
