Book Description
In the generation that has passed, what have we learned about the rule of law, legality, legal reasoning, and deviance in Russia? And what about the general subject of legal socialization—how young people learn about rules, norms, and laws; what their attitudes about rules and laws are; and, if and whether this knowledge and these attitudes shape their behavior? The second edition of Russian Youth asks and answers these questions.

Book Description
This newly revised and expanded second edition of The Soviet Union Today provides a comprehensive introduction to contemporary Soviet reality. Written by thirty experts, the book is divided into eight general sections: history, politics, the armed forces, the physical context, the economy, science and technology, culture, and society. The individual chapters, which are intended to respond to the questions most frequently asked about the Soviet Union, are devoted to everything from the Lenin cult to the KGB; from Soviet architecture to Soviet education; from the status of women and ethnic minorities to the question of religion. All of the chapters from the first edition have been updated, and five new chapters—on the Soviet cinema, mass media, foreign trade, arms control, and the legal system—have been added. An annotated list of further reading suggestions and a special "Note for Travelers" enhance this volume's usefulness. Students, teachers, journalists, prospective tourists, and anyone interested in Soviet life will find this new edition of The Soviet Union Today an essential and stimulating guide to understanding the world's largest country.

Book Description
The introduction of a market economy in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe required an enormous legislative effort, in order to create the regulatory framework for a vast array of new economic activities. The resulting statutory materials in turn gave rise to numerous books and articles, by domestic lawyers from the countries concerned, as well as by foreign scholars. By comparison, the other part of the legal diptych - the establishment of the rule of law - has received less attention from academic commentators. The purpose of this volume is to correct the balance to some extent, especially by looking at various aspects of legal reform through the prism of human rights. The legal implementation of a respect for human rights turns out to be an even more comprehensive and pervasive enterprise than creating the legal framework for a market economy. A number of important areas of law are highlighted in this volume; the emphasis is, although not exclusively, on the Russian Federation.
