Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Value of the Gospel The basis of durable social work is religion. Its motive power is charity in its Christian sense. The general principles of social well-being and the true spirit of Christianity lead us back to the teachings of Christ. Hitherto we have possessed no Catholic work in English on the precise subject of the social import of the Gospel; and since correct views upon this particular matter are necessary for those engaged in social work, Miss E. Willson accepted the task of translating the volume of M. Leon Garriguet entitled La Valeur Sociale de l'Evangile. The scope of this work is confined to the teachings of the Gospel, the teaching of the Apostolic writings being merely incidentally referred to. Neither does the author deal in any way with the motives or spirit of Christian charity. The purpose of the book is to state the position taken up by Christ on the general questions of wealth, poverty, property, community of goods, socialism and economic progress. It may be here mentioned that quotations have been taken either from the English originals of works referred to, or from English translations of other works, whenever such exist. For the assistance of the general reader a brief account is supplied of the authors whose works are cited in the course of the volume. Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Gospel Jesus has no social gospel for bad people. His ideals presuppose goodness. They are meaningless to men and women who are out Of sympathy with God. That is why it is SO hard to get the gospel actually at work throughout our Social life. Sin is a fact that cannot be overlooked by social reformers any more than by any one else. It takes sound tim ber to make a sound ship; and it takes regenerate souls to make a regenerated society. The gospel is the message of a salvation assured to individuals and society who accept Jesus as their Lord. Book Description
Excerpt from The Social Gospel and the New Era The social function of the Christian Church is to bring God more consciously into human relationships with a view to have the Christian life flourish at its best. The reconstruction period has brought an enlarging conception of the kingdom ideal which is leading the modern Church to recast some of its notions and to re adjust its methods, in order to broaden and intensify the personal religious life of the individual and to open up a larger field for social service. Excerpt from Essays on the Social Gospel The purpose of the following pages is to show that the moral directions of Jesus are not complex in their demands, but require of us simply that one thing that can alone bestow upon the will singleness of aim, and produce in us a steadfast, independent attitude of mind. His words are too often used by Christians. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gospels and the Gospel Such readers required no general introduction to the subject to ensure a patient consideration of the immensely important problems of Gospel criticism laid before them; and even now, when these papers go forth in book-form to a wider public, the majority of my readers will still be of those who take an intelligent interest in the subject, and who will approach it without pre j udice. They have the courage to think for them selves, and are, therefore, not to be deterred from reading a book because it bears the name of a Society whose intentions and labours have, for the past quarter of a century, been for the most part as greatly misunderstood as the work of all pioneers the world over in every advance towards a better understanding of the nature of things.
