This work is the first to examine the life and legacy of Dutchwoman Alexine Tinne as an example of the cultural and gender shifts taking place in the Atlantic world in the long nineteenth century. Based on primary research in both England and Tinne's native home of The Netherlands, this work not only updates her biography, but brings her story into the field of transatlantic history. In tracing the life of this one woman one can see how roles for women expanded and how new opportunities for women, especially travel, came about in the Victorian period. Tinne serves as a perfect vehicle to trace the social changes occurring for women in this era because contemporaries saw her as a product of her elite upbringing, a symbol of eighteenth-century elitism, but by the end of the nineteenth century Tinne writers remade her as an abolitionist saving slave children across Africa. Through new research into the transatlantic legacy of Tinne, incorporating newspapers, magazine articles, and especially the book The Heroine of the White Nile; Or, What a Woman Did and Dared. A Sketch of the Remarkable Travels and Experiences of Miss Alexandrine Tinne by Professor William Wells (1871) this work establishes the six lives of Alexine Tinne - traveler, tourist, explorer, imperial mother, New Woman, and historical construct. Through an examination of these six lives, all constructed through the lenses of race, class, and gender, one can see the evolution of women's roles in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This work serves as an entry point into the discussion of writing women's histories, their biographies, and about rehabilitating images lost or changed over time. It is a work in transatlantic history, women's and gender studies, exploration and discovery, intercultural transfer, and the importance of memory and perception on the craft of the historian.

An intricate network of contacts developed among women in Europe and North America over the course of the nineteenth century. These women created virtual communities through communication, support, and a shared ideology. Forged across boundaries of nationality, language, ethnic origin, and even class, these connections laid the foundation for the 1888 International Council of Women and formed the beginnings of an international women's movement. This matrix extended throughout England and the Continent and included Scandinavia and Finland. In a remarkable display of investigative research, Margaret McFadden describes the burgeoning avenues of communication in the nineteenth century that led to an explosion in the number of international contacts among women. This network blossomed because of increased travel opportunities; advances in women's literacy and education; increased activity in the temperance, abolitionist, and peace reform movements; and the emergence of female evangelicals, political revolutionaries, and expatriates. Particular attention is paid to five women whose decades of work helped give birth to the women's movement by century's end. These ""mothers of the matrix"" include Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton of the United States, Anna Doyle Wheeler of Ireland, Fredrika Bremer of Sweden, and Frances Power Cobbe of England. Despite their philosophic differences, these leaders recognized the value of friendship and advocacy among women and shared an affinity for bringing together people from different cultural settings. McFadden demonstrates without question that the traditions of transatlantic female communication are far older than most historians realize and that the women's movement was inherently international. No other scholar has painted so complete a picture of the golden cables that linked the women who saw the Atlantic and the borders within Europe as bridges rather than barriers to improving their status.

The nineteenth century witnessed a flowering of museums in towns and cities across Britain. As well as providing a focus for collections of artifacts and a place of educational recreation, this work argues that municipal museums had a further, social role. In a situation of rapid urban growth, allied to social and cultural changes on a scale hitherto unknown, it was inevitable that traditional class and social hierarchies would come under enormous pressure. As a result, urban elites began to look to new methods of controlling and defining the urban environment. One such manifestation of this was the growth of the public museum. In earlier centuries museums were the preserve of learned and respectable minority, yet by the end of the nineteenth century one of the principal rationales of museums was the education, or 'improvement', of the working classes. In the control of museums too there was a corresponding shift away from private aristocratic leadership, toward a middle-class civic directorship and a growing professional body of curators. This work is in part a study of the creation of professional authority and autonomy by museum curators. More importantly though, it is about the stablization of middle-class identities by the end of the nineteenth century around new hierarchies of cultural capital. Public museums were an important factor in constructing the identity and authority of certain groups with access to, and control over, them. By examining urban identities through the cultural lens of the municipal museum, we are able to reconsider and better understand the subtleties of nineteenth-century urban society.
