Book Description
The Shattering II is a compelling true story (but written in novel form) of healing from childhood sexual abuse. It is a story of the power of love, the promise of hope, and the inspiration of knowing that we are not defined by our circumstances. Readers are held in suspense and will find their hearts forever touched by this inspiring story. Healing is a journey. If we can be brave enough to enter into the dark shadows of the unspeakable and pull back the shades, we not only reveal the light, but captives are set free. It is God's desire to take us from lost to found, from death to life, from victim to victor. As Barth's first book, THE SHATTERING I, this book is beautifully written. As Toni Stewart wrote on Amazon, She deftly explores the generational aspects of abuse in families and the inclination of adults in our society to turn a blind eye or "let it go." The true artistry of this story is how openly Marsha is able to explore the hearts and minds of each character making the reader truly care about each person involved, even Julie's tortured father, Ron.

Book Description
A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of the Year From the National Book Award winner, a masterful history of the decade whose conflicts shattered America’s postwar order and divide us still. On July 4, 1961, the rising middle-class families of a Chicago neighborhood gathered before their flag-bedecked houses, a confident vision of the American Dream. That vision was shattered over the following decade, its inequities at home and arrogance abroad challenged by powerful civil rights and antiwar movements. Assassinations, social violence, and the blowback of a “silent majority” shredded the American fabric. Covering the late 1950s through the early 1970s, The Shattering focuses on the period’s fierce conflicts over race, sex, and war. The civil rights movement develops from the grassroots activism of Montgomery and the sit-ins, through the violence of Birmingham and the Edmund Pettus Bridge, to the frustrations of King’s Chicago campaign, a rising Black nationalism, and the Nixon-era politics of busing and the Supreme Court. The Vietnam war unfolds as Cold War policy, high-stakes politics buffeted by powerful popular movements, and searing in-country experience. Americans’ challenges to government regulation of sexuality yield landmark decisions on privacy rights, gay rights, contraception, and abortion. Kevin Boyle captures the inspiring and brutal events of this passionate time with a remarkable empathy that restores the humanity of those making this history. Often they are everyday people like Elizabeth Eckford, enduring a hostile crowd outside her newly integrated high school in Little Rock, or Estelle Griswold, welcoming her arrest for dispensing birth control information in a Connecticut town. Political leaders also emerge in revealing detail: we track Richard Nixon’s inheritances from Eisenhower and his debt to George Wallace, who forged a message of racism mixed with blue-collar grievance that Nixon imported into Republicanism. The Shattering illuminates currents that still run through our politics. It is a history for our times.

Book Description
The Rice Genetics Collection of past symposia and other selected literature contains nearly 4,400 pages of searchable information on rice genetics and cytogenetics published by the IRRI and its partners since 1964. In addition to the five genetics symposia held at 5-year intervals since 1985, the collection contains classic publications that kicked off significant reporting on these subjects in the early 1960s. This collection is a comprehensive and historical documentation on the subject of rice genetics, spanning 45 years of research and scholarly work.Held in 1990 and published the following year, Rice Genetics II contains 65 chapters from various contributors on topics dealing with rice genetic research, including varietal differentiation and evolution; genetic markers, linkage groups, and aneuploids; genetics of stress tolerance, morphological and physiological traits, and disease and insect resistance; tissue and cell culture; molecular genetics of cytoplasmic and nuclear genomes, rice proteins, and disease resistance; RFLP analysis of rice genomes; and transformation techniques.

Book Description
When scientists analyze datasets in a search for underlying phenomena, patterns or causal factors, their first step is often an automatic or semi-automatic search for structures in the data. Of these feature-extraction methods, topological ones stand out due to their solid mathematical foundation. Topologically defined structures—as found in scalar, vector and tensor fields—have proven their merit in a wide range of scientific domains, and scientists have found them to be revealing in subjects such as physics, engineering, and medicine. Full of state-of-the-art research and contemporary hot topics in the subject, this volume is a selection of peer-reviewed papers originally presented at the fourth Workshop on Topology-Based Methods in Data Analysis and Visualization, TopoInVis 2011, held in Zurich, Switzerland. The workshop brought together many of the leading lights in the field for a mixture of formal presentations and discussion. One topic currently generating a great deal of interest, and explored in several chapters here, is the search for topological structures in time-dependent flows, and their relationship with Lagrangian coherent structures. Contributors also focus on discrete topologies of scalar and vector fields, and on persistence-based simplification, among other issues of note. The new research results included in this volume relate to all three key areas in data analysis—theory, algorithms and applications.

Book Description
Many consider the Battle of Midway to have turned the tide of the Pacific War. It is without question one of the most famous battles in history. Now, for the first time since Gordon W. Prange s bestselling "Miracle at Midway," Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully offer a new interpretation of this great naval engagement. Unlike previous accounts, "Shattered Sword" makes extensive use of Japanese primary sources. It also corrects the many errors of Mitsuo Fuchida s "Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan," an uncritical reliance upon which has tainted every previous Western account. It thus forces a major, potentially controversial reevaluation of the great battle. The authors examine the battle in detail and effortlessly place it within the context of the Imperial Navy s doctrine and technology. With a foreword by leading WWII naval historian John Lundstrom, "Shattered Sword" will become an indispensable part of any military buff s library. Winner of the 2005 John Lyman Book Award for the "Best Book in U.S. Naval History" and cited by "Proceedings" as one of its "Notable Naval Books" for 2005."

Fidel Castro. Che Guevara. Cesar Chavez. Karl Marx. Mao Tse-tung…and others. All Icons of the Progressive Left, and similarly the infallible Icons of the early years of Professor Frank M. Luna as he grew up on a small farm in Central California. After his matriculation at Fresno State, Professor Luna soon discovers that the Iconic foundation has cracks, and he decides to cleave them open for all to see. In this flowing and riveting account, Professor Luna chronicles his decades-long transformation to discard his political upbringing amidst the discovery of the horrors of these Marxist leaders and their states, while also exposing the US academic community’s complicity in their crimes against humanity. At times humorous and always engrossing, along his journey Professor Luna encounters biased instructors, heroic and quirky students, and institutions of higher learning that are not quite what they promote themselves to be. Shattering the Icons is an engaging narrative of a political and teaching transformation. A must read for the general public and educators alike, Shattering the Icons is a clarion call for the academic community in the US to transform itself.
