Investigates how musicals, war films, sex comedies, and Westerns dealt with contentious issues during a time of change in Hollywood. The era known as the Hollywood Renaissance is celebrated as a time when revolutionary movies broke all the rules of the previous “classical” era as part of the ferment of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Yet many films during this era did not overtly smash the system but provided more traditional entertainment, based on popular genres, for a wider audience than the youth culture who flocked to more transgressive fare. Ken Windrum focuses on four genres of traditionalist movies—big-budget musicals, war spectacles, “naughty” sex comedies, and Westerns. From El Dorado to Lost Horizons shows how even seemingly innocuous, family-oriented films still participated in the progressive aspects of the time while also holding a conservative point of view. Windrum analyzes representations of issues including gender roles, marriage, sexuality, civil rights, and Cold War foreign policy, revealing how these films dealt with changing times and reflected both status quo positions and new attitudes. He also examines how the movies continued or deviated from classical principles of structure and style. The author describes how the immigrant peace sects-Quaker, Mennonite, and Dunker -faced the challenges of a hostile environment. From handshakes on the White House lawn to Picasso's iconic dove of peace, the images and stereotypes of peace are powerful, widespread and easily recognizable. Yet if we try to offer a concise definition of peace it is altogether a more complicated exercise. Not only is peace an emotive and value-laden concept, it is also abstract, ambiguous and seemingly inextricably tied to its antithesis: war. And it is war and violence that have been so compellingly studied within critical geography in recent years. This volume offers an attempt to redress that balance, and to think more expansively and critically about what peace means and what geographies of peace may entail. The editors begin with an examination of critical approaches to peace in other disciplines and a helpful genealogy of peace studies within geography. The book is then divided into three sections. The opening section examines how the idea of peace may be variously constructed and interpreted according to different sites and scales. The chapters in the second section explore a remarkably wide range of techniques of peacemaking.This widens the discussion from the archetypical image of top-down, diplomatic state-led initiatives to imperial boundary making practices, grassroots cultural identity assertion, boycotts, self-immolation, ex-paramilitary community activism, and 'protective accompaniment'. The final section shifts the scale and focus to everyday personal relations and a range of practices around the concept of coexistence. In their concluding chapter the editors spell out some of the key questions that they believe a geography of peace must address: What spatial factors have facilitated the success or precipitated the failure of some peace movements or diplomatic negotiations? Why are some ideologies productive of violence in some places but co-operation in others? How have some communities been better able to deal with religious, racial, cultural and class conflict than others? How have creative approaches to sharing sovereignty mitigated or transformed territorial disputes that once seemed intractable? This volume examines the possibility – or need – of a revitalization of pacifism as a world-political practice. It takes as its point of departure the observation that although ‘just war thinking’ has long been dominant in Western debates about war and peace, recent events have served to temper enthusiasm about the doctrine. Pacifism has been much less prominent a stance in recent decades, but there is the impression that it may be staging a return. Just war thinking has to a large extent failed. An alternative approach to mapping the world offers a new way to contest capitalism and globalization. Shangri-La, the Bermuda Triangle, Transylvania, the Golden Triangle--far-flung in popular conception, these anomalous places nonetheless occupy the same mysterious zone, a mythography of unruly cartographic practices. And because this mythography becomes associated with a particular area of the earth's surface, it may well suggest an alternative means of mapping the world, dissociated from the dominant geographical paradigms of nation-state, economic region, and the global/local marketing nexus. Large-scale nonnational geographical spaces that find their genesis in popular feeling, mystery, and belief, these four sites provide Brett Neilson with the basis not only for rethinking the current global reorganization of space and time but also for questioning the dominant narrative by which globalization marks the victory of capitalism. Free Trade in the Bermuda Triangle moves between analysis of popular fantasies and engagement with on-the-ground realities, weaving together topics as diverse as airplane disasters off the U.S. Atlantic coast, the global drug trade, vampire culture in postsocialist Europe, and the search for utopia in Chinese-occupied Tibet. The study of globalization is largely a solemn affair, occupied with increasing economic polarities, environmental degradation, and global insecurity. Free Trade in the Bermuda Triangle maintains a critical focus on these sobering issues but at the same time asks how popular pleasure and enjoyment can create viable alternatives to the current global order. Neilson takes seriously the proposition that capitalism must be contested at itsown level of generality, finding provisional grounds for resistance in nonlocal transnational spaces that embody quotidian hopes, desires, and anxieties.
